Milby, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. W. Milby of Summersville, and a student at Olivet Nazarene College, Kankakee, IL., was instantly killed last Friday in an explosion which occurred in a munitions plant at Elwood, IL. His twin brother, Eudell who was working in the same building escaped with a head and shoulder injury. Eugene's body was among the first identified out of the 60 killed in the ordinance plant explosion. The deceased was married December 18, 1941 to Miss Ruth J. Hogenmiller of Gorham, IL. who in addition to his parents and Eudell survive. Interment was in the Murphresboro, IL. Cemetery, Sunday, June 7th. The explosion in which Milby, was killed was the most disasterious since America went to war. It shook the entire countryside around Elwood. In Chicago building's trembled and 120 miles away the blast was felt at Logansport, Ind. In the shipping room where the explosion, occurred, about seventy men were at work. A number of other workers were just o! utside ,the building and in or near three or four box cars, which were torn and twisted by the blast. Eye witnesses said the building went up with a ear-splitting explosion. A sheet of flame followed. There were a few minor explosions and then the flames died down. According to a Government spokesman it was said that bombs used by Gen. James Doolittle in his attack on Tokyo possibly came from the Elwood plant. Obituaries of Green Co. Ky.
