He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Early's Chapel Methodist Church in Taylor County at the time of his death. He united in marriage to Miss Emma Jane Webster in 1914, and she preceded him in death. To this union were born three sons. Surviving are: Henry Howell, Wheaton, Illinois; and Maj. William C. Howell, Riverside, California. A son, Jim Alfred Howell, preceded his father in death December 22, 1942. Mr. Howell united in marriage to Mrs. Minnie Burress October 4, 1967, who survives. Mr. Howell during his active life was prominent in the civic and business activities of the town and county and for more than 15 years was a druggist in Greensburg, and served the county as high sheriff from 1925 to 1929. He was a breeder of fine saddle horses for a number of years, and was instrumental in reviving the Green County Fair of which organization he was President up until the time it was dissolved a few year ago. Early in life he was married to Miss Mildred Elizabeth Leachman who preceded him in death on March 4, 1918, to which union five children were born all of whom survive except James Madison Howell, Jr., who died in infancy. In 1921 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Minnie Skaggs who also survives. One of the county's distinguished citizen! s, Mr. Howell leaves a host of relatives and friends throughout the state who were grieved at the news of his death. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him and his kind and friendly disposition endeared him to many. He was a life long resident of the county, having been born here July 20, 1871 and was the son of the late William Green and Louisa Elizabeth [Smith] Howell. Mr. Howell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Howell; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred H. Wilson and Mrs. Frances Dulworth, both of Louisville; two sons, J. Hugh Howell, Greensburg Druggist, and William B. Howell, New Castle, Ky.; two sisters, Mrs. Rose Howell Neal and Miss Bettie Howell. both of Greensburg; six grandchildren also. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, December 30, 2:30 P. M. at the Greensburg Baptist Church, of which he was a member, by the pastor, Rev. S. L. Pruitt. Burial was in the Greensburg cemetery. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Junius Sullivan Campbellsville; six brothers, Vaughn, Shively, Thomas, ElIis and Kenneth Coffey, all of Greensburg and Perry Coffey, Chatham, Illinois. Services were held at Cowherd & Parrot Funeral Home, Tuesday, January 14, at 2:00 p. m. with burial in Bethlehem Cemetery. Rev. V. A. Jones and Rev. Landon Hadley officiated.
