My Mom and I and some other researchers have followed every lead possible to determine the mother of WPD and firmly believe that Nancy Skaggs is NOT his mother. As there are records indicating WPD's birth as early as 1832 and as late as 1837...even being generous, Nancy would have been between 71 and 76 years old at his birth if she was born abt 1761. We made the assumption that she was born after Dec 1770 since her father Henry gave consent [implying she was not "of age"] when she married Peter DeSpain 15 Dec 1791. Even with this assumption she would have been between 62-67 at WPD's birth. Certainly not impossible, but is unlikely. WPD's death cert gives Peter DeSpain as father, but mother is left blank; the informant was his son-in-law William Nick Ward. Nancy (Skaggs) is not in Peter's household in 1830 or 1840 federal census nor is WPD in the 1840 federal census. There are no records to indicate where WPD was until 1856: "Satisfactory proof was this day Made in open court by the oaths of John Purvis & William Skaggs who are disinterested that Peter Despain late of Green County, Ky. departed this life on the 31st day of March 1850 that he was the identical Peter Despain named in an original certificate now here to the court shown dated at the war office of the United States 1st day of December 1832 No. 2877 & signed by Lewis Cass Secratary of War and granting to said Despain a pension of sixty dollars per annum. It was further proven to the satisfaction of the court that said Despain died leaving no widow but leaving a son whose name is William Perry Despain who was born on the 2nd day of August 1837 and is now about 19 years of age and is the only minor child of said Peter Despain Dec'd." This William married Mary Ann Elizabeth Thompson, d/o Nathaniel P. Thompson and Kerin H. Money [sister of Perry Money]. William & Elizabeth (Thompson) Skaggs and Kerin (Money) Thompson end up in Indiana by 1860 and remained there til their deaths. It is my belief that this William D./B. Skaggs that married Mary A. Elizabeth Thompson, was the guardian chosen by William Perry DeSpain. Their relationship would be WPD's father Peter and William Skaggs' grandmother Tempy (DeSpain) Belcher were siblings. I also believe that Mary A. Elizabeth (Thompson) Skaggs is also the daughter of Nathan P. Thompson and Kerin H. Money. So far, I've not found any evidence of Mary A. Elizabeth's death other than the fact that William Skaggs remarried. William D. Skaggs to Mary A.E. Thompson. Bond 19 Mar 1849. Robert F. I know a lot of this post is sidetracked from the original question of who is WPD's mother, but I am in hopes that someone may "see" something here to lead to more clues. It seems evident that there are close ties to the Perry Money family, but how close, is mostly speculation at this time. In WPD's civil war pension application he states he was born and lived in Green Co., KY all his life. He is not found in the 1850 Green Co., KY census; at least not as "William DeSpain". The questions remain: Where is he from birth to 1856 and who is his mother? Any input here would be greatly appreciated! Denise: Can you tell me where Barry Belcher was buried in Green County? The only thing that I have seen on this is that it was near the Adair County line.
