He also chews tobacco. He likes corn bread best cooked in a skillet over an open fire and remembers how his mother did all the cooking in this manner, as there were no stoves in those days. He says their lights were tallow candles, with wicks made of thread spun at home. These were placed in hollow bum shells. His clothes were also woven at home of cotton, flax, or wool. I! n his younger days he did some farming but mostly has been engaged in logging, and has ridden many rafts of logs down Cumberland River to Celina and Nashville. He also split many rails with wooden malls and wooden wedges. The old gentleman clearly remembers days of the Civil War. One time a regiment of soldiers came and took his father's horses. They tried to make Uncle Shady saddle them but he was too small, being always small in size. The soldiers bade his father build a fire and when the fire was slow to burn, they threatened to kill him. The father took a flint rock and kindled the blaze by striking the rock with a piece of steel. Uncle Shady, who was twelve at the time, had just bought himself a little red hat for ten cents. He was afraid the soldiers would take it and when he met them coming up the steps, he hid it under his coat. One of the men told..... Obituaries of Green Co. Ky.
