His first wife was 20-29 years of age in 1840. If living in 1850, she would certainly have been over thirty, not 27 as shown. William and John M., and perhaps even Leander and Marshall, were the children of Ansel and his first wife. On the other hand, within the six-year gap between the birth of John M. and the birth of Leander, Ansel may have been widowed and remarried. The death record found for Ansel's son, John M., indicates that the deceased's parents were "A.B. and Betty Cook." From that, the given name and surname of Ansel's first wife were taken. According to a brief family history prepared by Enzy Mae (Whobrey) Houchin, Ansel was a Mason and a deacon of New Harmony United Baptist Church for several years prior to his death. She also contends his given name was William Ancel. This latter goes against all the Census evidence, his tombstone, and the way he gave his name in affidavits in connection with his son, William's, application for disability pension for civil war service. I believe he is the son of John Cook b. 1794 NC. I have no proof at this time though. Can anyone tell me who the John is that has property next to Issac and Jane.
