    1. [KYGRANT-L] Sipple Family Bible/Murder in the Family
    2. Judie French
    3. Actually, Cathy, its more of a Clark Family Bible. Sara Frances Clark b. 23 Mar 1847 (2 Ely L. Clark; 1 James Clark) + Simon McKendry Sipple b 10 Mar 1846 (6 James M.; 5 John Sipple, Sr.; 4 Caleb Sipple; 3 John Sipple; 2 John Sipple; 1 Garrett Sipple). Sara Frances and Mack, as he was called, moved to California in 1878. Sara Frances kept a bible of her generation of Clarks. It lists her siblings (including two who died in infancy), the death dates of her parents, their marriage date. All stuff I have already posted to the list. She also had a wonderful tin type picture of Ely with his beard and his long rifle. Lots of pictures of women but I can't identify them - she, of course, didn't mark them. Just like she wrote her mother's name as "Mary E." She didn't have to fill in the rest because she knew. My grandmother, Susie Mae Sipple Elder, was their daughter and she had the Bible until I absconded with it. It fascinated me and I repeatedly ask her about her family and the trip to California (she was 8) and what she remembered about Grant County. She would not answer. Tight lipped. Closed mouth. Huffy expression: "You better not. You just don't know what you might find back there." Later, one of my Aunts tells me that Grandma told her that there was a murdered in the family back in KY on the Sipple side. Now Mack was born in Harrison Co. His dad, James, was the only one of the crew who settled there. But Mack removed to Grant County and stayed there until he removed again to Tulare Co., CA. So I think the infamous ancestor may have been one of his siblings. If it had happened in Grant Co. one of you cousins would have heard about it. I sure wish I had access to the Harrison and Grant County criminal court records. It would be so much fun to know. I just love being descended from Garrett Sipple who committed an unspecified misdemeanor in court and repeated busted for drunk and riotous behavior. So much more fun that all those preachers... Cheers. Cousin Judie ll those preachers... Cheers. Cousin Judie=20

    2. When did this murder take place, you all must be talking off this site, or I am not being sent all messages? I know about a murder, not mentioning either surname, that happened in Grant Co., this century. I know several people connected with this family (alive and doing well) and would never comment. Just wondering, Bonnie

    1. Re: [KYGRANT-L] County Records
    2. Dear Sandy, I am sorry that it took me a couple of days to get back to you. Thank you so much for the lookup. The Margaret and James you found with infant George is spelled Beech on the 1880 Census. This is my family. James had a brother named John Beech (or Beach born ca. 1844/5). I have no idea of what happened to him. He had two sisters named Susan and Catherine. An older sister born ca. 1839/40 married a man named Birch (or Burch) and they had a son named Stephen who was living with James Beech in 1880 in Jonesville. James parents were Dinah Stafford born 1822 (I believe in Woodford County, KY) and Henry Beach born 1810 either in Woodford or Fayette Counties. Dinah Stafford's mother was named Mary Stafford and she was born somewhere in KY in 1800. Both Dinah and her mother died in Elliston sometime between 1870-1880. The Webster side is easier to find. John Christopher Webster was in a fight in Grant County in 1856/7 and I believe hauled into court. Someone bit off his ear. He was born in 1825 in Jessamine County and was married to Elizabeth Kennedy born 1832 in Woodford County. They moved to Grant County in 1853. Margaret had an older brother born in 1849 named John Taylor Webster and a twin sister named Alonza Webster who was also born in 1851. She had 13 other siblings including Lewis Christopher Webster who was married in Grant County. If you come across anything else on these people I sure would love to have it. There is much confusion on this line because of the Beach Book and the author connected my line back to the wrong James Beach. There were two of them one in Gallatin County who married Nancy Collins and my line in Grant County who married Margaret Webster. Thanks again. I appreciate all you effort and help. Take care, MichaelAnne

    1. [KYGRANT-L] Re: Census handwriting and oops, I posted a Clark error
    2. Judie French
    3. Well, Joy...I have a photocopy of the census and I went over to Kinkos and blew it up a million percent so I could really read it, the reason being that bad handwriting gave me fits. I was looking for my GGrandfather and could not find him anywhere. I have the family bible and it says that his name was McKendry Sipple and he was born in Harrison Co. Practically went blind from looking and zip, nada, nothing. So, I finally hired this really nice researcher. She had some trouble, but finally found him in the 1850 and 1860 census just like I knew he was supposed to be. Except he was listed as Simeon Mc and the c was so little and up high near the top of the M that it looked like Simeon M. In the three birth records we could find, his mother's name looked like Mary McGuire and several people accepted this and posted to LDS files. My professional said, "Nope. It's McGuin." I blew it up and she was right, sure enough. Also, folks. Earlier today I posted a marriage bond for Ely L. Clark and it was correct except that the bride was Mary Elizabeth Draper. Sorry... Judie in Oregon where it is 78 and wonderful...

    3. Judie, I am glad you had someone who was able to read it, some of it was very hard to read. Some page are very easy, but the census taker on the page with James Clark wrote very sloppy.I love actually being able to see the census on my computer without ever having to leave the house. It may be a little sloppy, but there is just something about looking at the actual image that is great.I sent you the copies before you said you already had it.I would like to know if you got it,so I can tell if I sent it right. I am very happy with the way the list is going right now and you are a big part of the traffic on here, I sure appreciate all of your posts, keep up the good work. 3. I forgot to mention on the offer to do look-ups that even though gennealogy.com only gives images for 1850(and only on some states, however Kentucky is one of them),it does list census indexes for all states. If you know of a probable year and state your ancestor lived in,let me know and I can send you the census roll # and page #.Please try to be as specfic as you can and give as much information as you know. I will be very happy to do the look-up. Talk to you later. 3. Judie, I just started using it but , so far I really like it.I doesn't have all of the census images uploaded yet,but it does have IN,KY,MASS,NC,PN,RI, and VA. images for 1850. It also has genealogy books and census indexes for all states from 1790-1880. I have found a few branches of my family on it and it great to see the actual images online. I will send you a copy of the image with the Clark name on it if you like.I can post it to the list however,I wish I could but.. it is a no no. You do have to pay to use it , $99.00 a year or$ 9.95 a month. I will send you the copy and you can see if you like it. It lists his children as Eleanor Ashcraft Ely Clark James Clark Louisa Buskirk and Wm. Clark's children, my grandchildren, John Riffle Clark and Elizabeth Jane Clark. I also have the marriage bond for Ely Clark and Sara Frances Sipple which states that they were married in the home of James Clark (probably the elder) and that one of the ministers was James Clark (not clear which).
