Mary b. 1870 Clarke Co., MS Other notes: Burdett Kemper was married to Jemima Thompson who was a sister of Thornton K. Thompson. In notes that were given to me and said to be written by Mr. Forrest Calico: "I promised early in this story to return to Lt. J. J. Thompson. At or just before the beginning of the Civil War, Col. Frank Triplett says in his story of this feud and its ending and the end of the life of Thompson, that said Thompson's father, a native of Garrard county, and a planter in MS, who had a large amount of cotton land, was persuaded by his son to place it in his hands for sale and a large part had been delivered when the wife of the elder Thompson, who was the stepmother of the Lt., suspected that something was wrong and that the Lt. was trying to defraud his father, persuaded him to send no more cotton and to attach or prevent the movement of that which had already been delivered. Wondering about the delay, young Thompson rode toward his father's house to find out the reason for it. On meeting him with the sheriff, he stopped and an altercation arose and young Thompson was so enraged, he shot his father and after quarreling with his stepmother, he killed he! r and a sister (or half sister0 and shot and wounded badly a half brother. A posee gathered and he was captured and that night was lynched by the enraged citizens." END I have searched for several years to verify this account of the death of J. J. Thompson and luckily ran across the account written by the Noxubee Co Historical Society 1991. I think we can safely assume that James Thompson was in the process of defrauding his father, was caught out more than likely by his stepmother which explains why he shot her and was probably lynched.
