Thompson was given to The Memphis Tenn paper and I have a copy here in my files. Basically James was along side one of his brothers in the civil war when his brother was killed. He went AWOL to South America and made a deal for his father's cotton crop and tried to beat his dad out of the crop and some land. They were shipping the crop when the murders occurred. James's wife found a letter from the daughter of the man who was to recieve the crop and confronted him about it. James became violent and killed everyone in the house at the time but one half sister. He then went looking for his dad but was lynched before he could kill him. The big tree is still standing in the side yardof the house. The Farm runs along the road and tracks from Brooksville to Macon and one of the recent owners before his death was Tennessee Ernie Ford. I think there were about 6000 acres in the farm when Thornton Died. Thanks Harold W. Rarden PS. James, Roland and Joseph were the three sons in the Civil War and Roland was the brother thst was killed. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
