There was a well-known engraver of that name but he was b 1808 in Engl. (I understand that an engraving of Henry Clay by him was/is? in the library of the Old Capitol Bldg. in Frankfort, KY.) John and Page Sartain are mentioned in 1815 deeds executed in Louisville for the Illinois grant, in the papers of Geo. Rogers Clark. (Also spelled Sertain, Sartane). Did your folks go to IL? The land may have been sold rather than occupied. In 1820, there was a John Sartain in Giles Co., VA and one in Madison Co., GA. This one in 1860 looks promising for yours though: 1860, Illinois MASON BATH P O Series: M653 Roll: 210 Page: 544 SARTAIN JOHN 65 M W KY IL MASON BATH P O 1860 He was a farmer, with Sallie M. 63, Thomas J. 25, Helen W. 20, all b KY.
