I am a new subscriber, and I am hoping for a connection to my Baugh line. I have been searching for the parents of my great grandfather, James M. Baugh, for quite some time now. A member of the Baugh list told me he saw a James M. Baugh on the Garrard 1870 census... so, here's the oral history, along with what I can prove: James M. Baugh was born 11/1851 in Kentucky. He had a younger brother, Ben J. Baugh (seen as Ben J. on some census after 1880, and Benjamin on others). Ben was born 9/1857 in Ky. According to the oral history, there was also a baby sister. Time frame uncertain, but would be after Ben was born and while sister still an infant, there was an attack of some sort on their farm. The mom hid the boys under flooring in the barn, telling James to take care of his younger brother, and not to come out until she told him to. She then went back to the house to get the baby. She never made it. The boys' father, mother & baby sister were all killed by the attackers. After the attackers left, the boys made their way to an uncles farm where they were raised. Various elderly members of my family state different things about the "attackers", some that it was Indians, others that it was army deserters. What I know for certain in that: in 1875, James in in Clark Co., Indiana, where he married my great grandmother, Harriet A. Felmet. I have info on Hattie's ancestry, as well as their children, but nothing on James's ancestry. By 1880, James in in DeKalb Co., MO. Ben is also in DeKalb. Oral history is that after marriage to Hattie, James went back to Kentucky, and brought Ben home with them. From then on, Ben is always near to or living with James and Hattie. The family later moved to Texas, and finally to Pittsburg Co., OK, where James died in 1929. A son-in-law gave info on James' death record that James' father's first name was Marion, mother's last name was Tripett, but no other information is listed, and we are unsure if this info is even correct. I am hoping to make a connection with anyone who might have information on this Baugh line. Would any with knowledge Garrard Co, KY history have information about an attack such as I have described? Thanking you for any help. Dora Savage Albrecht
There is only one family of Baugh (Jesse) listed in the 1860 census index in Garrard Co., KY. though there are many others in KY in general. There are several children in Jesse's household including a Ben, but no James. In the 1870 census, there is a cluster of Baughs in Garrard Co. around Brandy Spring (Paint Lick P.O.), including the Jesse from 1860. One of these is a 15-yr old James working on the farm of a Conos? or Cross? family - name very difficult to read. None of the ages correspond to the birth dates you give for James M. and Ben J. There are no Marion Baughs in the 1860 or 1870 census, but there is one in Bunscombe Co., KY in 1910 and 1920. --- Dora Albrecht <[email protected]> wrote: > I am a new subscriber, and I am hoping for a > connection to my Baugh > line.
