I agree that I like Family Tree Maker. However, they do have a way of dropping support for older versions so you have to buy new updates every year or two. See attached I just received from them. Reminder - Support of Outdated Versions to Be Discontinued At Genealogy.com, we work hard to offer you useful new features and keep up with advances in hardware and operating systems. Changing technologies sometimes make it necessary to discontinue live support for outdated products. As a result, technical support of Family Tree Maker versions 7.5 and earlier will be discontinued on June 30, 2003. Support will still be available for Family Tree Maker versions 9 and 10. If you're still using one of these early versions, now is the time to upgrade to Family Tree Maker 10. When you upgrade, you get all the great features you missed in previous Family Tree Maker versions. You'll still have technical support. Plus, you'll be able to view all our latest CDs with Version 10. Your data and family trees will open easily in Family Tree Maker 10. In fact, they will look better than ever, because you can apply all the new features to the data, trees, and reports you have already created! Because we cherish our long-term customers, we're offering you a 25% discount on the upgrade with a choice of data to jumpstart your research. You'll get all the latest features, fresh data to explore, and continued technical support. Order today! Offer expires June 5, 2003. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charles Brown" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, May 13, 2003 9:49 AM Subject: RE: [KYGARRAR] software > I use Family Tree Maker. > > As for transfering your files.... > You should be able to save all of your genealogical data as a generic GEDCOM file. GEDCOM is a format designed specifically for this task. Every genealogy software on the market today should be able to import the GEDCOM. Look for an EXPORT option in the FILE or TOOLS drop down menus of your software, then lok for EXPORT or SAVE AS GEDCOM. This will allow you to create the GEDCOM. Pay close attention to the path that you save to, because you will need to know it when you import into your new software. > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Monday, May 12, 2003 7:13 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [KYGARRAR] software > > > I hope that someone can give me good advice as to what I should do regarding > genealogical software. Just a word about genealogy software.... I find it interesting that folks think they need to get a new program because technical support has been discontinued. Before you run out and buy another program, ask yourself if you have ever had to call for technical support. If you have never had to call, why would you think you will suddenly need technical support? Just go on using your software; there is no reason to think the software is no good because there is no technical support. Sharon Young Jebavy <>< [email protected]
Please consider Legacy. A free version, which is missing a few bells and whistles, is available. Give it a trial run. See http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/. I began with Family Tree Maker, but became dissatisfied with its sourcing capability. I have been very happy with Legacy. It's a small company that does regular updates for no charge. They only launch a new edition when there have been significant new features added. Check out the sites that show user preferences; most that I've seen put Legacy at or near the top. The family data for my websites was generated by Legacy. Take a look.
