Dear Person puzzled by search engine of HeritageQuest [online genealogical database] I stumbled upon this catalog listing in Heritage Quest. It is quirky in its search, as you are finding. This is the catalog entry: Calendar of the Kentucky papers of the Draper Collection of Manuscripts Publisher State Historical Society of Wisconsin This is how I stumbled upon this entry (Please listen to my tale): I had a more recent ancestor, a German, who joined the US Army and was in the First Cavalry when it was formed--I believe before the Civil War. He joined in 1852, but it was Mounted Rifles, or some such name, later being named the First Cavalry. (I had read a book long ago in a *foreign* library.) I was hunting for a book [Publications, really] about the US Cavalry. United States did not give me any pertinent info. I typed in Cavalry [in the publication or was it the book section?] and up came this long list of titles beginning with CA I jumped out of my skin [almost] when the Calendar [with the above words] appeared. Let's see if I can repeat that, and then tell you how to access it. OK, just go to Publications part of Books Type in CAL [lower case OK] You probably will spot the Calendar for the Draper Mss on the second screen. If not, write back, and I will try my experiment again. (HeritageQuest was not indexed by Google, that's for sure!!) Furthermore, although there is an index at the end of the images, when I wrote these page numbers down, I found my person was missing from most of the pages. I hope you have some luck, and furthermore, that you find some of your early Kentucky ancestors. This *index* was compiled years ago and does not meet our expectations, so be patient, but again, if you are patient, you may stumble upon some interesting info. E.W.Wallace with lots of Kentucky ancestors, originally from North Carolina, Virginia [of course] and from Pennsylvania and eventually from Maryland ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
