I recently obtained a copy of Garrard County Chancery suit entitled Timothy Logan Devisees vs. Timothy Logan Ex. from the Kentucky State Library and Archives. It is from Bundle #330, Suit #2562 and dated 1859. I want to thank Kathy Vockery who suggested I take a look at this case, and others on this board who directed me to the State Library. The documentation is too voluminous to post in it's entirety, but I did want to share a section describing the distribution of the Timothy Logan estate proceeds. This section lists children and heirs of deceased children, which I will share here for the benefit of those that may be connected. First of all, I will list the children of Timothy Logan: 1. Hugh Logan, Surviving Executor of Timothy Logan 2. John Logan, Dec'd 3. Sarah Bradley 4. Mary Simpson, Dec'd 5. Elizabeth Alexander, Dec'd 6. Margaret Lear 7. William Logan 8. Anna Miller 9. Patsy Moran 10.Timothy Logan 11.George Logan 12.Susan Smith The first five children (above) are given as being from Timothy Logan's first marriage (which may have been to Sarah Boone, but has never been proven). According to the suit, Margaret Lear was the only child from TImothy Logan's second marriage, which was to Sarah Alexander in 1793 (according to Madison Co., KY marriage records). The last six children are from Timothy Logan's third marriage to Sarah Smith, which occurred in 1810 in Garrard Co., KY. The heirs of the deceased children are given as follows: Heirs of Mary Simpson -- John Kelly and wife Elijah Simpson, Jr. Elijah Simpson, Sr. Mitchell Broadus Ben Simpson Margaret Warmouth Heirs of Elizabeth Alexander -- Hugh Alexander James R. Alexander W. Lobban Neptune Lynch In other sections of the suit, distribution receipts are also given for other heirs of Elizabeth Alexander, namely John Alexander, Sallie Hubbard, and Mary Goodman. I am a descendant of John Alexander. The Alexanders had been living in Randolph County, Missouri since the 1820's and had assigned power of attorney to certain individuals "to collect their due as legatees of Timothy Logan." The suit involves the distribution of the proceeds from the sale of slaves, which were inherited from Sarah (Smith) Logan's father, Thomas Smith. Apparently, the proceeds were distributed to all the children, rather than just to the children of Sarah (Smith) Logan. Oddly, however, plaintiffs include children from the first two marriages while the Alexander children are named as defendants despite having nothing to do with the distribution of the estate. Plaintiffs for the case are as follows: Sarah Bradley Morgan Logan Elijah Logan Mason Logan Rice Logan Arethusa Hardin George Hardin Lucinda Nicholson Jeremiah Nicholson James Lear Margaret Lear Benjamin Simpson John Kelly Elizabeth Kelly Elijah Simpson, Jr. Elijah Simpson, Sr. (?) Broaddus Lucy Broaddus Aminidab Miller Anna Miller Aquilla Smith Susan Smith Stephan Moran Patsy Moran William Logan George Logan Timothy Logan Margaret James William James Defendants for the case are as follows: Hugh Logan Hugh Alexander Joel Hubbard Sarah Hubbard James R. Alexander John Alexander "and the remaining unknown heirs of Elizabeth Alexander" Timothy Logan was born in present-day Surry County, North Carolina in 1759 and died in Garrard County, Kentucky in 1848. It is said he migrated to Kentucky with the Boones. He was a Revolutionary War pensioner. I look forward to hearing from anyone who may connect. David Brown
