First - you said: (From Mrs. Carl W. McGhee, HISTORICAL RECORDS OF HARRODSBURG (MERCER COUNTY) FORMERLY KNOWN AS OLD CRAB ORCHARD, LINCOLN COUNTY, STANFORD, KENTUCKY; Washington, DC, n.d. LAFHC 976.948s M1735-8 Vol. 2, pt. 1) "Old Crab Orchard" and Stanford and Harrodsburg were/are 3 separate locations: this title doesn't compute. Second - one of my Anderson widows (nee Martha W. Thruston b. before 1795, widow of William Anderson [jr. b.1793 - d. Sep 1823] married 2nd husband John Rosson on 27 Nov 1834 in Jessamine Co KY). I haven't been able to find out anything about this man Rosson, and wonder if he could have been a "Rosser" of Garrard? Have you any knowledge of a John Rosser b.ca. 1790? ________________________________________ PeoplePC Online A better way to Internet http://www.peoplepc.com
The following notes [may have to split this into installments] MAY be of interest to researchers of Rosser and or Kemper families, formerly of Fauquier C o. and of Prince William Co, VA.. (My AOL connection seemed to get weak-kneed about the time I sent this.) Submitted by E.W.Wallace a descendant of John Kemper. Sr. of Garrard Co., KY Note: Corrections and additions are invited. Nothing in my databases is written in stone [except perhaps a tombstone or two, of which there are few.] EWW RICHARD ROSSER.(Probably died ca 1835-36, Garrard Co., KY). His wife is reported to be Judith Kemper. Judith's relationship to John Kemper [Sr.] of Garrard Co. KY is unknown, but she may be a sister. According to compiled marriage bond records of Fauquier Co., one Richard Rosser was married to Judith Kemper on or about 23 Sept 1779. She was designated as daughter of Peter Kemper. Rosser's Rev War pension number is reported to be S31344. According to the Revolutionary War Pensions Lists, Pension Roll of 1835, Vol III, Kentucky [The Learning Co., CD 145], he received a pension payment Sep 1, 1832. He served in the VA State Troops. The first payment was $23.33, and he received a total of $69.99. He was age 78. This would give a birth date of ca 1754, an appropriate birthdate for a person in the Revolution. Whether the first payment was an annual payment or a monthly payment was not stated. At any rate, he seems to have received three payments of $23.33 each. Rosser is believed to have been the brother-in-law of John Kemper, Sr. of Buena Vista area, Garrard Co., KY. Kemper's wife was Sarah Rosser, whom he married 15 Dec 1761, probably in the newly-formed county of Fauquier, VA. Part II of Biography of Richard Rosser of Garrard Co., KY or Mercer Co., KY Probable brother-in-law of John Kemper, Sr. of Garrard Co., KY Both formerly of Fauquier Co., VA Mercer Co. & Garrard Co., Kentucky Richard Rosser is believed to be the same Richard Rosser, who some years later, in 1832, in Mercer Co., VA, applied for a Rev. War pension, S 31344. Transcribed pension (Page 83, Section 158 [Garrard Co. records]) Richard Rosser of Virginia Service S31344 applied in Garrard County, KY for pension 8-20-1832, age 75, a resident of Garrard Co., KY states he volunteered 9-1777, and marched from Fauquire [sic] Co VA under Major Martin Rickett, Capt. Benj. Harrison. He arrived at Germantown, on the day of the battle and assisted in burying the dead, the next day, the troops were commanded on the day of the battle by General Weeden, states he was a volunteer, that he marched from the place of rendezvous, through Leesburg, VA through Maryland to Germantown, thence after the burial of the dead, joined the main army at White Marsh, commanded by Gen. Washington, continued in service 4 months. Gen Wayne, Scott and Woodford, commanded Brigade - Col. Heath commanded a regiment of regulars. Col. Marshall commanded the regiment to which this applicant was attached. And served 3 months in the militia at the seige of York under Capt. Alexander Scott Bullett, afterwards transferred to Capt. Wm. Bailes, he was attached to the regiment of Col. Edmonds, that he was discharged after the seige and taking of Cornwallis and after having guarded the British prisoners to Albemarle Barracks in VA. Section 159 --Affidavit - We John Kemper, Thomas B. Maddox, citizens of Garrard Co., KY states they have known Richard Rosser many years and know him to be about 76 years of age and I John Kemper - certify that I was a mess mate that said Rosser in the first tour spoken of by him and know that he served said tour, that we were together the day after the Battle of Germantown and I Thomas B. Maddox, certify, that the said Richard Rosser marched as he states from my father's on the last tour of 3 months and I knew when he returned with the prisoners and believe he served as stated at York and we both certify that Richard Rosser we believe was a soldier of the Revolution. (Added to the transcription: See Jane Rosser pension papers in Garrard County, KY records. (Sec. 159) (From Mrs. Carl W. An Earlier Richard Rosser There is reference in Northern Neck land grants dating from 1705 to at least 1746 to Richard Rosser in several counties. Rosser, Sarah - 490 [acres] 0 [pds] 5 shill 9 1/2 pence Ibid, p. 54) There is also reference to Rosser's Run, Prince William Co., VA. However, the name Richard Rosser has been carried down for generations in the United States, at least since the early 1700s in Richmond Co., VA. Refer to Wills of Farnham Parish of Richmond Co., VA. Dear Deb, You wrote: I am researching Richard Gill born abt 1776 somewhere in Va.. He married Martha Milly Hutcherson abt 1792 (possible Madison Co.) The lived in Garrard Co., where they had 8 children: James, Mary (Polly), Betsy, Jenny, Charles, Sarah, William and Lydia. They moved to Anderson Co. where Richard died abt. 1843, and Martha died abt. 1855. Would be interested in any info out there. Deb (Gill) Sanford Alabama My response: I am not answering your question. It seems you need to do some additional research of your families of Garrard Co. Therefore, I am making some suggestions which you MAY find useful. First Garrard Co.'s formation in 1797, created from Lincoln, Madison and Mercer counties. (Remember this.) Are you near Dothan, Alabama? If so, it is possible that you may be able to use the library facilities at Wallace Community College at Dothan, AL. At one time, they had a course in genealogy, and I believe the library may have been open for research by non-students, particularly the tax-payers of Alabama. I did a google.com search for Wallace Community College, and I see they have a website as well as a toll-free number. I did not see on the extended website a course called Genealogy nor did I see a link to a Library service. But, with the toll-free number, you might be able to determine whether they still have a good genealogy collection. Also, in the distant past, I belonged to the Garrard Co. Historical Society. For a fee, they will do some research for you. In the meantime, if you can get hold of a three volume set called The 1787 Census of Virginia, you may be able to determine whether there were any Gill families in Virginia at that time. At that time, Kentucky was still a part of Virginia, and so there are some Kentucky tax lists included in that so-called Census. These are really personal property [not real property] tax lists for nearly every county in Virginia at that time. The third volume of the set is an index to the two preceding volumes. I have learned to photocopy every page of the index which pertains to surnames I am researching in Virginia and in Kentucky. Surprise--my ancestor was already moving to Kentucky (Madison Co.) from Albemarle Co., VA. He had personal property in both localities. If you know the wife's name, search for her ancestors also in that list. I bet somewhere in Alabama, there must be a set of these books. My experience in a lot of Southern States, is that genealogy is a favorite pastime and libraries, even small ones, have a few books of use to you. (Check the Reference books while you are in a library.) Incidentally, some of us genealogists have discovered some great books in community and university libraries, which are located near our homes. Generally, you have to look under *Local History*. If you are near an LDS family history center, be sure to check out their holdings. Ask whether there are hundreds of microfiche called AIS - Accelerated Indexing system. This is now outdated, but still quite useful. It is an index to all the US censuses through 1850, and for some western territories, it goes beyond 1850. Also, there are some 1850 and 1860 mortality schedules. Remember--this is an index, and except for some early censuses where only numbers were used, the abstracts include those numbers. Since some censuses are missing in the early days, there are some tax lists for certain places in Search 1. (Each census year is a separate search.) Get acquainted with AIS at a nearby LDS center--if you can. Good luck! E.W.Wallace ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

I have been to the Kentucky Archives a couple of times and it was a real pleasure for me, the couteous archivists seemed happy to send for the records I requested. In one suit I found a hand drawn 1887 survey of property next to Mt. Olivet Methodist Church in Buena Vista. In another suit there was preserved a land sale hanbill printied on cloth. In another were statements on company stationary from the Daniel Ford Store in Bryantsville. And several other documents. Descendants of the First Germanna Colonists (1714) will be interested to know that on the online database HeritageQuest (available at some public libraries--only libraries can subscribe) there are references to some of your ancestors--and to the families with whom those colonists intermarried. The name of the book, which has been digitized is: H.C. Groome Fauquier during the Proprietorship: a chronicle of the colonization and organization of a Northern Neck County Richmond: Old Dominion Press, 1927, 264 pgs. There is a Table of Contents plus an index. (Get your librarian to show you how to deal with this database, unless you are 12 years old or younger!!! Or work with computers every day.) There are references to the Northern Neck patents of many of these colonists, and you can look those up on the Library of Virginia website--the *what we have* part--under Land Records. But, if you are like I am, you prefer a book or two, try to find in a nearby library the abstracts of these Northern Neck patents (controlled in later years by Lord Fairfax and his predecessors), abstracted and published by Gertrude E. Gray. There are four such volumes, each one arranged chronologically. The first two volumes probably refer to your ancestors--and their collaterals. Pay attention to their neighbors--these are the ones which the descendants married--German or not! I have a Kelly bride or two in my Kemper ancestry. A good many of the descendants, of course, went to Kentucky, particularly the Eastern Kentucky counties, such as Garrard and Mercer counties, and a few wandered to Fayette Co. (But, as a skilled genealogist-lecturer-author cautioned some of us: If you are looking in Virginia, look in every county. The same applies to its sister state--Kentucky!) Happy hunting! I should have read more. The young Evans who was so wounded was my g-grandfather William Tom (Thomas) Evans. He obviously recovered and move to Texas six years later. I am curious about the accuracy of some of those newspapers back then. The article in the Charleston Mercury indicates that one of Doc Hez Evans sons was killed on May 10 1850. As a descendant of the Doc, I am interested to know which son it was, or whether it was an ally. I have a list of all Doc's children and there is no match. The closest thing I come to is James Simeon b. 17 Aug 1835, d. 6 Jun 1855 (tombstone inscription). Does anyone have any clue as to the name of the "young Evans" cut up on the stairway of the saddlers shop? Bob Evans Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Here are my notes about the Henry Camper/Kemper/Kamper family of Fayette Co., KY. They had earlier resided in Fauquier Co., VA. Corrections and additions, hopefully with sources, will be welcomed. Fauquier Co. was formed from Prince William Co. Some of Prince William Co. records are missing. E.W.Wallace HENRY KEMPER. (ca 1730 ?-after Nov 1787) Information for dates of Henry Kemper come from NSDAR Gen Recs Comm, Lineage of Andrew Jackson Kemper. Henry Kemper is probably earlier known as John Henry Kemper, all the German children (males particularly) having the same first name, with the second name being the "calling" name. The name of John Henry Kemper appears in early Northern Neck surveys and land grants. Survey for Prince William Co., survey made for Thomas Jordan, 11 Mar 1739- 21 May 1740; between Carters Great Run & Barrows Run on Rappa. R. "adj John Henry Kemper." (Peggy Shomo Joyner's ABSTRACTS OF VIRGINIA'S NORTHERN NECK WARRANTS & SURVEYS... DUNMORE, SHENANDOAH, CULPEPER, PRINCE WILLIAM, FAUQUIER & STAFFORD COUNTIES 1710-1780, V. III, p. 117.) At approximately the same time, John Kemper/Kempar, apparently the father, had land surveyed. See biography of Peter or John Peter Kemper for details. "Wart [warrrant] adds Peter Kemper, and the chain carrier was Peter Kemper. However, at the bottom: N.d. - "in the name of Heni [Henry], Catharina & Maria Kemper." These are probably all children of John Kemper. Refer to early Northern Neck Virginia land patent. The children were minors at the time their father received the patent. Abstract of the actual grant, as opposed to the survey, differs somewhat in wording: Northern Neck Grant Bk E-408 Heni [Henry?], Catherine Kemper & Maria Kemper son and daughters of John Kemper of Pr. William Co. 362 A in said Co. on the Great Run of Rappahannock R. adj. Kemper's other land. Thomas Lee, Esq., Heirs of Maj. Richard Buckner decd. Surv by Mr. John Savage. 22 Jan 1741. (Gertrude E. Gray, NORTHERN NECK LAND GRANTS, 1694-1742 [Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1987, third printing 1997], p. 141) One Henry Kemper with wife Lettis (Lettice) was in Fauquier Co. 1764 until at least 1784. Fauquier Co. DB 2-23-24 gives information that Henry Kemper and Lettis (Lettice) wife sold to Jeremiah Darnall 40 A on Licking Run ... part of a tract taken up by John Fishback, John Huffman & Jacob Holtzclaw by Patent ... 21 Aug 1724 and conveyed from the above persons to John Kemper father to the said Henry Kemper ... to Licking Run ... Gott, FAUQUIER COUNTY, VIRGINIA, DEEDS 1778-1785, Vol. 2 [Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1993], p. 81-82) Henry Kemper appears on the 1770 rent rolls of Fauquier Co., along with Peter, Jacob, John, Harmon. By 1782-1787, Henry appears on the tax list of Fayette Co. (soon to be Kentucky) with three taxables and one slave. A William Kemper, and Tilman Kemper, possibly sons also appears on the tax list for Fayette Co. (Augusta B. Fothergill & James M. Naugle, VIRGINIA TAX PAYERS, 1782-1787 [Baltimore: Genealogical Publ. Co., 1986], p. 71) The KEMPER FAMILY genealogy states that Henry was a Baptist minister who moved to Kentucky in 1800, settled in Garrard Co., near Camp Dick Robinson. This family was living in Kentucky in 1814. However, further research reveals that the wills of both Henry and Leticia Camper were probated in Fayette Co., KY. Source of the following information was not noted: Fayette Co., Kentucky Will Abstracts Henry Camper - Will Bk A, p. 334, will written 24 Nov 1792, probated Jan 1793 sons: William Camper,Reuben Camper, Henry Camper.
