I believe my John was born around 1771 - 1778 married Mary Bryant of Shelby Co., Kentucky in 1797. Their children were: Thomas, John, James, but there weren't any Roberts that I know of. Thomas married Kezia McNew in Vanderburgh Co., Indiana around 1825 and John's brother Jesse settled in Vanderburgh also with his wife Dicsy. I believe Thomas's brother James died in Jessamine Co., Indiana. This family has been pretty hard to research but lately, I seem to be making some breakthroughs. I believe that John was a brother to Jesse, Thomas, James of Garrard and Jessamine Counties, Kentucky. I did do a somewhat cursory look at William Turner and have some suggestions for futher research. ***I'm using William Turner who married Rolinda Hurt as Jr with his father being Sr. 1. A William Turner is not listed in the Garrard Co. tax lists for years 1797 through 1802 suggesting that this particular line was not in Garrard during that period. Further, I found a death notice for a George Turner, who may have been William Turner (Jr) brother which substantiates that they were still in Virginia ca. 1802. >From the Garrard county death records: Turner, George, age 74, male, married, died 24 Dec 1876 of pneumonia. Born in VA, the son of William and Susan Turner. Both parents born in VA. George is buried in the Mt. Hebron cemetery with birth date of 12 Jul 1802 death date 24 Dec 1876 (See Cemetery Records of Garrard Co.) George was married to Milly Fowler 14 Oct 1833 in Garrard (See Garrard Co Marriage Records 1797-1853.) Then I looked at the Garrard Co. Chancery Court Index and found the following suits which might prove a connection that you need as these suits usually contain genealogy information due to the nature of the suit. 1. Turner, William adversary Thomas Fletcher. Suit heard Sep 1826, Box 17, Bundle 65, Suit #494, Order Book 9, Page 222. Because of the 1826 date, this may be William, Sr. because William Jr was born ca 1811 (based on tombstone) and would have too young to bring suit without a friend of the court action.) 2. Turner, Samuel vs. William Turner. Suit heard May 1853, Box 64, Bundle 254, Suit #2138, Order Book 20, page 357. (This is probably William who was marr to Rolinda Hurt) I do not know the relationship between Samuel & Wm Turner. 3. Turner, Samuel vs. George Turner. Suit heard Jul 1853, Box 65, Bundle 260, Suit #2162, Order Book 20, page 439. The Chancery Records are kept at KY Archives in Frankfort but you can order copies. Price depends on number of pages in suit. Kentucky Department for Libraries & Archives Research Room 300 Coffee Tree Road Frankfort, KY 40601 502-875-7000 www.kdla.ky.gov then click on research Chancery Court suits were about land disputes, estate settlements or indebtedness. Usually they contain depositions of family and friends. I believe there was a family connection between William, George & Samuel that would be worth checking out. Sometimes when you can't find a straight forward connection you have to go sideways. LOL Sandy Hurt-Norris Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [KYGARRAR] A Possible Way to Get Info from the So-called 1787 Census of Virginia, A Set of 3
    2. Dear Kentucky researchers - For those who are not near a library which has the three volume set called The 1787 Census of Virginia by Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florine S. Love, let me suggest the research method. Keep in mind that the third volume is the index for the preceding two volumes.: On the Family History Library website (_www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) ) are some Forms. Click on that word which is on the right of the opening screen. There are several drop-down menus--look on the right of the next screen. Choose *Sort by Title* Click on the letter R - the title you are looking for will be the first on the list - Request for Photocopy [which includes books and other material] Print out that form and get out your check book. The instructions are on the form. Follow them carefully. You can request that the Library in Salt Lake City send you photocopies of the surnames in the INDEX [not on the lists, just yet] which surnames you desire. (All you will get are the copies of the index pages.) You had better not try this with a REALLY common name, or you will be sending off and receiving LOTS of copies, which may be of interest, but it will blow your monthly budget for Starbucks coffee!!! Now, you will note the page numbers on which that surname appears. Then you again print out the same form but with a different request--for the particular pages in which you are interested. Again, get out your check book. A dedicated genealogist whom I know says she frequently asks for photocopies of index pages of books in which she is interested, and then requests the actual pages. She says the library also includes, at no cost, the title page of the book. You need this title page for citing your sources--a must for real genealogists!!! But be sure to check University and college library catalogs in your neighborhood. Although many such institutions don't particularly cater to genealogists, there are some real gems in some of those University shelves. For example, I was looking for a book of court records [abstracts] of a certain North Carolina county, which book had been compiled by a genealogist. Where it was shelved? In the Law Library of a prestigious California University!!!! I am told by a librarian that frequently university and college libraries will interlibrary loan their books. So ask your public librarian whether they will request interlibrary loan. (Some will NOT, unfortunately, but it is much easier with the internet!) Also, check the catalog of your State library. Some of them have wonderful collections of genealogical works. Pass this word along to other Kentucky websites. (For the uninformed--this so-called census includes the personal property tax lists for nearly every county in Virginia, including the counties which later became Kentucky counties--and West Virginia counties.). These are personal property tax lists--not land tax lists!!! E.W.Wallace who reviews the 1787 Census of Virginia again and again but I don't own it--it is at a Library which I use **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. 1. [KYGARRAR] Book Pertaining to Early Kentuckians and Descendents of some Granville Co Folk
    2. Dear Subscribers, Yesterday--and previously--I have mentioned that a good many books, out of copyright, it seems, have been digitized and appear on the online genealogical database called HeritageQuest. A good many public libraries have a subscription. If your library does NOT subscribe, ask *Why not?* Then ask the librarian to help you find a nearby library where you can pay an annual fee to be able to access this helpful source. The book I mentioned yesterday was a Calendar of the Kentucky Papers of the Lyman C. Draper Manuscripts. (Use the search term in the Book section: Calendar). [I have to return to that search, as there are other good books further down the list] Today, I am reminded that a Filson Club publication has been digitized and is also on HeritageQuest under Books. The author is George W. Ranck, and the book is Boonesborough. Long ago, when I discovered this book [I snoop in all the libraries which I frequent], I found some *goodies* pertaining to my people in the Appendices as well in the main text. I must get to the digitized book and see if those Appendices are still there!! The book seems to be well indexed--and seemingly cross-indexed also. Use the search term Boonesborough. As you must know some early Kentucky history, Col. Richard Henderson of Granville Co. NC, was the main speculator behind the establishment of Boonesborough. His agent, at least in the beginning, was his first cousin, Col. John Williams (later a Judge, as was Henderson, and he was called John Williams, Esq. in Granville Co. records). A few of the letters of these cousins appear in the Colonial Records of North Carolina, if memory serves. Some of them pertain to family members. I hope you find some interesting material in Boonesborough--maybe even some to expand your family history. E.W.Wallace **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. 1. [KYGARRAR] Calendar to the Kentucky Papers of the Draper Manuscripts
    2. Those subscribers who have access through their public library to the online genealogical database called HeritageQuest may be interested in reviewing the index (first) of the following digitized book. (As I understand it, public libraries, and not individuals, are the main subscribers to Heritage Quest. Originally, some genealogical societies were allowed to subscribe, but I think that practice has been discontinued.) My search term in HQ: Calendar [there will be other books which begin with that word, so go down the list] Pass this along to other rootsweb sites to which you belong--especially those linked with not only Kentucky but North Carolina [whence came many of the people who first settled Boonesborough], Pennsylvania, and, of course Virginia. The author is said to be anonymous, but I believe the calendar was compiled by Mabel Clare Weaks, as indicated on the Family History Library catalog [www.familysearch.org] Calendar of the Kentucky papers of the Draper Collection of Manuscripts Madison: State Historical Society of Wisconsin, 1925. 630 pgs. You can click on the index, and you will see many indexed references to Boonesborough, and a lot of pioneers of early Kentucky. The word Calendar refers to a kind of index, so you will NOT see great amounts of information, but enough to whet a genealogist's appetite. The Draper Manuscripts have been filmed, but the copies I read some years ago at my local LARGE State University [microfilm room] were barely legible. I had to transcribe the letters which one of my ancestors wrote to Draper [Lyman Copeland Draper] concerning his own father, who was a sidekick of Daniel Boone. There was another anecdote about the old pioneer given in an interview by his brother-in-law--about his being treed by a bear. Ask at a nearby LARGE library, preferably a State Historical Society or a large University library, whether these microfilm can be read by the general public. In my case, I had to have a card issued by the University library, as that was my *passport* to the guarded microfilm room. (Well, not a security guard at that time, but who knows what the procedure may be these days.) The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has the films of the Draper Manuscripts. You may want to do an author search in the FHL Catalog for *Lyman C. Draper*. There are 147 reels of film at the FH Library. Be prepared that you may have to transcribe the article/letter/newspaper clipping if the film is as bad as I found it to be. Nonetheless, the information is very precious to me. Oh, yes, a grandson of the old pioneer also wrote letters to Draper, indicating there was a quarrel within the family. (Not surprising!) E.W.Wallace PS If you have access to HeritageQuest, how about posting your *finds* on a rootsweb list. For instance I found some information on the family of Nathaniel Hart, an early pioneer in Madison Co., KY [near Boonesborough] entitled Susan Hart Shelby: a memoir. It was written by Samuel M. Wilson, and published in Lexington, KY, 1923. It gave some dates of the birth of Susan's mother, Sarah Simpson, the wife of Capt. Nathaniel Hart. The couple were probably married in Virginia 1760, but I am thinking it may have been North Carolina. Sarah Simpson was the sister of Mrs. Jesse Oldham (Bettie or Elizabeth Simpson), formerly of Caswell Co., NC but later of the Boonesborough area. **************Start the year off right.
