Thompson was given to The Memphis Tenn paper and I have a copy here in my files. Basically James was along side one of his brothers in the civil war when his brother was killed. He went AWOL to South America and made a deal for his father's cotton crop and tried to beat his dad out of the crop and some land. They were shipping the crop when the murders occurred. James's wife found a letter from the daughter of the man who was to recieve the crop and confronted him about it. James became violent and killed everyone in the house at the time but one half sister. He then went looking for his dad but was lynched before he could kill him. The big tree is still standing in the side yardof the house. The Farm runs along the road and tracks from Brooksville to Macon and one of the recent owners before his death was Tennessee Ernie Ford. I think there were about 6000 acres in the farm when Thornton Died. Thanks Harold W. Rarden PS. James, Roland and Joseph were the three sons in the Civil War and Roland was the brother thst was killed. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. War Plaque put on the end of the crypt Of James Thompson in the graveyard at Forks of Dix Church. I have done history on that Lt. James Thompson and he was from Henrico Co. Va. and never rec'd a land grant in Ky. Also, The only l;and grants north of the Green River were all treasury warrants and had to be bought. Calico also has some research claiming this James of Lincoln to be the nephew of Isaac Shelby. That James Thompson was a Capt. in the Rev. and is buried in Burkes Garden Va. I have gone through all of the James Thompson's thjat I could find in Va. and our James was from the Northern Neck of Va. Loundon Co.-Fauquier Co. and was a Baptist (not Prebyterian) His fathers name was Andrew(namesake of his first son) and his family had recently come from Ireland. He was a very low profile person and one tough character. He had a cousin in Woodford County who's lineage traces back through Pennsylvania and to Ireland. He has probably more surveys than anyone I have ever seen. I have also done much research on the families connected to his in Va. and Ky. They were in Woodford, Garrard and Mason primarily and almost all pioneers into Ky. I have also abstracted Thornton's place in Mississippi and havea been there anda have pictures of the farmhouse and tree where James was hung after committing the murders of his family and have a copy of the newspaper aeticles about the murders and the reason for them. If anyone has a question aboput any of this contact me at my address. Thanks Harold W. Rarden Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don't have the settlement of the estate. I have a note on my file that says the birth date of Thornton K. Thompson, 28 May 1801, is from the family bible of James Thompson. If Harold Rardin is reading this, he probably has more information as he has done quite a lot of research on James Thompson. Donna Will of James Thompson - 1824 First Surveyor of Lincoln County, Representative, Justice and Senator of Garrard County Will Book T pg. 29 In the name of God, I, James Thompson of Garrard County and State of Kentucky do by these presents make, institute and ordain this to be my last will and testament and altho now standing in the light of Eternal God but also realizing the uncertainy my mortal life, do hereby ordain this to be my last will and testament. Author: CabinSue Surnames: Thompson, Hill, Evans, Murphy Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.garrard/3936.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The author of this account, written for the Noxubee Co. Historical Society, states that she (Lucille M. Reeves)based her account on the interview of Emily Thompson which appeared in the 10 Dec 1865 edition of the Clarion. In this interview, Emily states emphatically that she believed that it was a plot between two of her brothers, Joseph and James to defraud her father. She also listed a secondary source named "Gov", a former slave of the Thompson family who lived in Brooksville and often accounted this story and may (probably) embellished with each telling hence the insertion of a son named Richard which is not true. The story was told for 72 years in Noxubee county before Ms. Reeves started researching. The lineage that I used was given to Ms. Reeves by Mrs. Luther Glenn of Sun City, AZ, descendant through Indiana Thompson and her first husband, Frederick Kemper. Mrs. Glenn obviously believed that Thornton's father was Lt. James Thompson and his wife, Ruth Peyton. The story was written in 1991 so I'm not sure if Ms. Glenn is still living. All I did was check the Garrard county marriage records for Thornton Thompson's marriages to Almira Rout, Lucretia Jeffries and Susan Letcher in order to verify somewhat Ms. Glenn's understanding of her lineage. Has anyone checked Garrard county for a will left by James Thompson that may list his heirs? Any additional information can only add to our knowledge or furnish leads to investigate. I, too, would be interested in reading of any other accounts of these murders. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He was not the Lt. that Calico had him credited as being. He was in Ky. Co.Va. surveying in 1778 and was on many military operations as the team horse wagonmaster with George Rogers Clark and also with Col. Benjamin Logan and the Kentucky and Lincoln County Militia, one of the original justices when Kentucky county was formed and Kentucky was made a state, a senator and congressman. Thornton K.Thompson was his son and James J. was his grandson. I have a different story on how he ended his and his families life in Mississippi. Thanks Harold W. Rarden, Flemingsburg, Ky. 3. Judy, thanks for the warmth of your response. My sister, was special to me as she was a my inspiration by her example and life. She cared for all people and raised a sound family of six sons. It was a shock hearing about her ordeal of cancer that was completely unexpected in the way it so quickly took her away from us. She was strong with unfailing faith throughout. Of her three siblings, I am the eldest. she was third in line. Today, I spent a short time with our mother, soon to be 94, and is in the care of a nursing home with early Alzheimers and somewhat tearfully confused by the loss. She is unable to make the almost 200 mile trip. But I will go for the funeral tomorrow with two of my own children. I leave two wonderful people at home besides my mother. My wife and handicapped daughter; they too are special and need my presence, but with hope they will do well for my time gone. One of my sons is in Florida and probably will not make the trip. Thank you again for your kindness. Gerald

He stated that Thomas Levingstone, Sr. is John's father but I was also looking at a John that stays in Jessamine county when my John and Jesse head for Indiana. John's brothers that I know of so far are: Thomas ,James and possibly Jesse (who married Dicsey Stoghill and went to Indiana along with John's family. It is thought that Thomas Sr. was a brother of John Orril Levingston and they were orphans of Robert Levingstone - I have not proved this connection yet.
