    1. [KYGARRAR] Thanks for Paint Lick Reflections queries!
    2. Rita Fox
    3. Whoa! What a response! I now have filled the query pages for the Winter issue of Paint Lick Reflections and am well on my way to filling the Spring one, too! Of course, I always have to give first spots to subscriber-submitted queries, but will continue to place your queries as space permits in future issues. Release dates are January, April, July, and October (with query deadlines generally the first of the prior month). Also, please be sure to include a mailing address in all queries because most of my readers are not on the Internet. Thanks again for your quick responses! Reflections is mailed to about 550 households in 32 states (and 1 in Canada), so I think your chances of hearing from someone are very good. I even recognized some of the names you all are looking for from previous queries, memories, and stories printed in the magazine, which means others are interested, too. I welcome family histories and documents, photos, stories pertaining to the Paint Lick area, as well. Those can be in more depth than the queries. If you have roots in the Paint Lick Creek, Back Creek, Silver Creek watersheds, then you probably are in the target area of this magazine. If you aren't sure, just ask me! Thanks again and happy hunting! Rita Fox, Editor/Publisher Paint Lick Reflections 11093 Richmond Road Paint Lick, KY 40461 paintlickreflections.com

    3. For my magazine, Paint Lick Reflections, I'm transcribing the last account book of Dr. Spilman (who lived on the hill above Paint Lick in Madison County). The account book began in 1876 and continued until Dr. Spilman died in 1892. Alva Pulins (sic) account ran on pages 6 and 25. The first entry was a visit to son George on 14 March 1876. There were many visits for George that spring, including one that lasted 24 hours on 2 April. Then Dr. Spilman began a series of many visits to Alva's wife in June 1876 and son Alva Jr. in July. Both were seen frequently through October 1876. There were 47 entries in all for the family (quite a lot compared to other families in the book)--some to dispense pills and others for actual medical visits. On May 23, Alva paid on the account with 17 pounds of mutton, which would mean he probably raised sheep. On 21 Feb. 1877, he paid the balance of the account with $125 cash. The book doesn't list what ailments were being treated (with rare exceptions), but usually mentioned who was treated (or their relationship to the person responsible for the account) and what treatment was given. What I find most useful is the mention of deliveries of babies because there were no birth records available in the county at this time and these may be the only place where such events have been recorded. He usually mentioned if it was a boy or girl and the date delivered--and the whopping $10 standard baby delivery charge! So far, I have transcribed up to page 31 of the account book (as of the Autumn issue of the magazine). I try to supplement the meager information in the account book with other resources, including census, cemetery, etc. For instance, the entry for the Pullins family included the 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses, plus their burial information from the cemetery book. (They're buried in the Maret Cemetery on Isaacs Road off Broaddus Branch. However, I didn't record the other Marets buried there--and my cemetery book is buried under a pile of boxes right now.) Time won't permit me to do many lookups, if any. I'm swamped with the holidays and getting the January issue together (plus doing a family cookbook for my own family's 2003 reunion). But I just happened to remember the Pullins (Pulins) records and had a few minutes to share the info. Hope it helps! 3. If you're interested in Garrard County history and genealogy, then I have the perfect gift for you (or a loved one who shares your interest). A subscription to quarterly magazine Paint Lick Reflections! Each issue covers the many communities in the southeastern Garrard and southwestern Madison county area, including Paint Lick (Brandy Springs District in 1870-80 censuses), Lowell, Point Leavell, Cartersville, Wallaceton, Hackley, Kirksville, Dripping Springs, Harmon's Lick, Fonso, Manse, and Flatwoods. Some of the watercourses in this region are Paint Lick, White Lick, Silver, Copper, and Back creeks. Each issue has at least 40 pages (the last two had 48!) of reminiscences, queries, history, genealogy, and current events. Most of my readers are interested in nostalgia, so I try to make the content 80-85 percent focused on the past. Three issues are available immediately, and a fourth will be mailed in late January. Or you can add to an existing subscription before rates go up Feb. 1. Each annual subscription is only $21.20 for Kentucky residents (and $20 for those outside the state). Learn more about this quarterly at www.paintlickreflections.com. If you would like to submit a family history (with photos, if available) please e-mail me for details on what I need. I also welcome queries for all of Garrard and Madison counties and run them free, as space permits. Many of my readers are not on the Internet (some of them are in their 90s!), so it's a great place to find local historians and family resources you won't find elsewhere. I have more than 500 readers in 32 states (and one in Canada)! Thanks for reading and Happy Holidays to everyone! 1. [KYGARRAR] Jameson "James" Alexander c. 1780 - 1845 of Garrrad Co., KY and Randolph Co., MO
    2. DAVID BROWN
    3. I am researching my ggg grandfather Jameson or James Alexander of Garrard County, Kentucky. He owned land near or on the Back Creek. I first find him listed as Jameson Alexander on the 1799 Garrrard County, Kentucky Tax List. On March 1, 1804, James Alexander married Elizabeth Logan in Garrard County, KY with Charles Finnell as minister. I believe he had the following children: Sarah (Alexander) Hubbard, John A. Alexander, Samantha (Alexander) Lobbin, Mary (Alexander) Goodman, Lucinda Alexander (died young), Serilda Elizabeth (Alexander) Lynch, and two other sons. The family moved to Randolph County, Missouri in the 1820's, and James Alexander died there by September 30, 1845. In 1851, all of the above named children assigned a power of attorney to collect from the estate of Timothy Logan in Garrard County, KY. It seems likely that Timothy Logan was their maternal grandfather. James Alexander may possibly be related (son?) to Sarah Alexander who appears on Madison County, Kentucky tax lists in the 1780's and 1790's. Any information as to identity of Jameson or James Alexander's parents/siblings as well as his location of birth (which I think was Virginia) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
