Dear Sir, One of my great grand fathers was Abner Bassett, he and his brother John came to Garrard Co. in the later part of 1790's, John was listed int 1820 census records, would like to know if he left a will or his estate was probated, listing his children, he was a slave owner and must have had an estate. Rev. Benjamin Wheeler m. to Sophia Bratcher: Benjamin was a s/o my g-g-grandfather, William Wheeler, and his wife Sarah "Sally" Shrewsbury; his brother Abel Wheeler is my g-grandfather. Benjamin was born in Garrard County, KY on 12-8-1807 and died in Gentry County, MO on 1-5-1893. He is buried in Wheeler-Hardwick (or Hardwick-Wheeler) Cemetery in Pattonsburg, MO Sophia was the d/o John Bratcher and Nancy Shrewsbury. She was born 3-16-1801 in Culpepper County, VA and died 2-24-1877. I don't have proof of the death location, but she is also buried in the same cemetery. Rev. Benjamin was closely associated with Freedom Baptist Church in Garrard County. If memory serves me correctly, when he and Sophia migrated to Gentry County, he founded a church there and named it Freedom Baptist after the church in Garrard County. Sometime ago, someone (I believe it was Brice Bratcher), sent me photos of the tombstones of Rev. Benjamin and Sophia. He also sent a copy of a document with a photo of the MO Freedom Baptist Church which contained a brief history of the church. I have lost the copy of that document and would really like to get another one. If someone has a copy of it, I would really appreciate it if they could e-mail me a copy. Gary W. I grew up in this area of AR and have heard the tales of the Bests, Calloways, Mousers, Huckleberrys, Holders, Boones, etc. there. Do you know the relationship between the Bests and the Austins? Did they know each other only from Potosi, Missouri only, or did they come from earlier parts together in KY or VA?? If so, where in KY & VA? Also, do you know of Sarah Jane BEST, who was born about 1780 in Bedford County VA and married Elisha Hall in VA in 1800-01? They had a daughter Drucilla Hall that married Wm Bird Greer, Sr. They are all in my direct lineage. Is Sarah Jane Best part of the Isaac Best family (or tied somehow)? Drucilla & William Greer's daughter married a Barham and they moved in 1849 from KY/TN to the same community in southwest AR as Isaac Best, and the two families continued to intermarry there. It just seems they must all be connected. This same Barham line was earlier in VA, NC, TN, Calloway Co KY & Logan Co KY. I have a great deal on the Best, Mouser, Holder, Huckleberry, etc. folks in early AR. I'll be glad to exchange info with you if you have more you can share on the early Bests, etc.

My family has an old tin type photo that is likely Prudence Bland (b. 1797 Garrard co., KY d. aft 1880) with writing of the frame that she was 102 years old when she died. It is not confirmed it only says that it was John Thomas Miller's (b. 1847 Garrard?, KY d. 22 Mar 1921 son of Harrison Miller and Mary Ann Austin) grandmother without name. I don't have a death date on Prudence but she was living with Harrison and Mary Ann during 1880 US census and would have been 83 then, althought census said 90. Plus I can't find J. T. Miller's other grandmother (b. KY per census) to rule her out. If anyone can look up 1890 US census I would like to see if Prudence was alive then. She would have been 93 then, dying the year before 1900 US census. Not sure if she would still be in Ray co., MO, but probably close by in 1990.

Do you think the bondsman, Samuel W. Miller could possibly be the father or relative of Harrison? I am not aware of the customs of the 1800's around such matters. "Frankie" might well be a nickname for Frances. The Frances shown as married to John Smith on the 1850 census was born @ 1790, and so she would have been 15 or 16 in 1806 -- probably about the right age to have been the Frankie Hunley married to John Smith (he would have been 29 or 30). If they are in fact the parents of Peyton W. Smith (born @1826), then Frances Hunley Smith may well have been the aunt of Frances West Marksbury Smith as her mother (married to Peyton West) was Rebecca Hundley (Hunley)!! Thanks again for all your help Julia

Smith is the son of John Smith (what I hope to demonstrate with the probate of John Smith), the Frances (Francis) West Marksbury who married Peyton W. Smith in 1849 (and was the mother of John Thomas Smith, b. 1849, Andrew, b. 1853 & Peyton W., b 1857) would be the daughter-in-law of John Smith who (believe it or not) was also married to a Frances (maiden name unknown). And you are right, the Frances West Marksbury who married Peyton Smith in 1849 was the daughter of Peyton West!!! It is very possible that John Smith was married prior to his marriage to Frances ?, I just know that she was his wife at the latter part of his life. There were at least 2 John Smiths in Garrard County from the early 1800s. I did not know about the other little boy born to Peyton Smith and Frances West Smith. I am grateful for that information.
