R. Sparks at Buckeye about one o'clock Friday afternoon. There were no witnesses to the shooting. Isbell lived only a minute after being found by J. R. Sparks, operator of the store. He had hurried to the garage immediately after hearing the report of a pistol. Isbell had been summoned as a witness in a case which was to have been investigated in the Garrard circuit court that afternoon. In company with two young men, Joe Ray and Ira McCulley, he started for Lancaster about noon, but turned back to Sparks' store after they had traveled a few miles. Isbell had gotten out of the car when the decision was reached to turn back. Upon arrival at the Sparks store, Isbell asked Ray to go into the store to purchase a package of cigarettes. While Ray was away Isbell entered the garage and ended his life. S. H. Anderson, coroner of Garrard county, examined the body of Isbell and returned the verdict of death "from a gunshot wound self-inflicted." The body was removed to the home of his sister, Mrs. Charles Murphy, who lives near the scene of the tragedy. Isbell was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Isbell, a prominent family in that section. He is survived by a brother and three sisters. Two years ago Isbell served as deputy sheriff under James Robinson and made a very capable officer. He was a nephew of Edward Chandler, of this city. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon, interment following at Gunn's Chapel cemetery.

Surnames: Hurt, Anderson, Stamper, Ray, Simpson, Long, Newby, Tudor Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xAB.2ACI/2155 Message Board Post: Again, no date: Gilbert, the little six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter East of Buckeye, had his little life crushed out beneath the wheels of a two horse wagon on last Saturday. The little fellow had come to town with his uncle, Barnett, the fifteen year old son of Mr. Owen East of Buckeye. They came for some cement and seed rye and after making their purchases started for home. When near the farm of Dr. J. B. Kinnaird on the Buckeye pike, near the foot of the "town hill". Barnett descended from the wagon and went across the fence at the side of the road for some purpose, leaving little Gilbert on the seat holding the lines. The restiveness of the mules in jerkng their heads probably jerked the little fellow from the seat and the mules moved forward, the front wheel of the wagon passing across the chest of the helpless little boy, and before his horror stricken uncle could reach him the little body was so crushed as to place him beyond recovery. A young man passing gathered him i! n his arms and hurried to town with him in his buggy, taking him to the house of Mr. J. D. Gulley, where medical aid was summoned and everything possible was done, but so seriously was the little body crushed that there was absolutely no hope and he died within an hour. The parents were at once summoned, and the grief of the heart broken mother at the sudden death of her little son was distressing. For a while whe could not comforted, and it was some time before the kindly ladies who surrounded her in their efforts to be of assistance, could persuade her to leave the little body to be prepared for burial. The remains were taken to the parental home near Buckeye on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday afternoon at three o'clock all that was mortal, the little bruised and broken body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Buckeye.

Surnames: Hurt, Anderson, Stamper, Ray, Simpson, Long, Newby, Tudor Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xAB.2ACI/2154 Message Board Post: The following is a newspaper clipping found in scrapbook but unfortunately no date: Virgil Pendleton, 37 years old and unmarried, died at the Danville and Boyle county hospital Tuesday night from the effects of a gun shot wound, said to have been inflicted by Wilburn East on the Poor Ridge pike last Sunday afternoon. Sheriff Robinson and his deputies are still searching the county for East, who seems to have slipped the officers. Pendleton was shot in the left side, the ball entering the body about three inches below the heart and lodged near the spine. Dr. Virgil Kinnaird who took Pendleton to Danville, performed the operation early Monday morning in an effort to save Pendleton's life. According to Pendleton he was riding his horse down the road toward the home of a neighbor whom he wanted to take a truck load of hogs to Danville, when he met East, who was on foot. East asked Pendleton where he was going and the latter replied, "None of your business," he said. East then said, "I'll show you if its none of my business," and, according to Pendleton, drew a pistol and fired. Pendleton said East would have fired again, had he not begged him not to shoot. Pendleton stayed on his horse until he reached the home of Harrison Ray, from which place he was brought ot Lancaster by Dr. Virgil Kinnard. Pendleton is survived by several brothers, all of this county and one sister who resides in Louisville. Funeral arrangements had not been made when we went to press.

Surnames: Hurt, Anderson, Stamper, Ray, Simpson, Long, Newby, Tudor Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xAB.2ACI/2152 Message Board Post: The passing, recently of Mrs. Jane Wray Hurt, relict of Joshua Hurt, who preceded her to the grave by a few years, marks the passing of the oldest generation of the Hurt family. An unobtrusive, law abiding, God-fearing people, the Hurts have long dwelt a quarter of a mile from the Richmond Road in a splendid home on back creek; a home noted for its hospitality from whose doors no person, regardless of their station in life as ever turned hungry. Devout members of the Christian church at Fairview, of thich Mr. Joshua Hurt was an Elder, and whose purse strings had twice opened generously to rebuild the old structure damaged by the elements; their children, five boys and two girls surviving, were also raised in this faith. The Hurts are a remarkable family: Sam Hurt whittled his way to fame and moderate fortune by making cob pipes which are smoked by everyone from the Garrard county fox hunters to United States Senators and men of note throughout the world. The other boys, Dave, Jim, Tom and Will, are no less talented. Not one of them but can take down and reassemble any piece of machinery from a radio outfit to a threshing machine. They have in their home one of the most complete and efficient radio outfits in the country, bought piece by piece and assembled by themselves. They own and operate two threshing outfits, they are expert carpenters, brick and stone masons, can rejuvenate old furniture and one of them is master of almost a lost art, Jim Hurt is an expert sharpener of mill stones, a trade almost extenct. They are at present engaged in the erection of a neat brick and frame bungalow on the Richmond road, which will be when completed, a masterpiece of architecture and will be occupied by Thomas, who conducts a blacksmith shop and garage at Point Leavell, who is also a master workman and capable of earning his living at several trades. One of the surviving sister, Jennie, married a local blacksmith, Mr. Auburn VanHuss, who is also a mechanic of parts; the other sister, Sallie, married Isaac Bowling, who owns and resides upon a farm near Oxford, Ohio.

He left his home near the mouth of Paint Lick creek Monday night in a boat and was to return in a few hours. Just how the accident occurred will never be known, as there were no eye witnesses. He was employed by his father as assistant ferryman and was considered a good boatman and a very good swimmer, it is said. The body was found near the Garrard side of the river, lying across a wire that had been stretched from the Garrard to the Jessamine side of the river and about 12 feet from the bank. His boad was found on the other side of the river and about 200 yards from where the body was discovered. Coroner S. H. Anderson was called and an inquest held, the verdict being that he came to his death by accidental drowning. Hurt is survived by his widow and four children. Burial took place at Gunn's Chapel Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock. NOTE: Grave is unmarked. He was married to Iva Dale Simpson, daughter of Mike and Mary (Anderson) Simpson of Buckeye. His children ranged in age from 14 years to 2 months old.

Surnames: Hurt, Anderson, Stamper, Ray, Simpson, Long, Newby, Tudor Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xAB.2ACI/2149 Message Board Post: Following article found in ggrandmother's (Susan Waldridge Hurt) scrapbook. There is no date. The following is taken form the Lexington Leader of the 27th. "Moses Ray, the huckster who was severely injured by the dynamite explosion on Water Street early Wednesday morning, and who is now on the way to recovery, seems to bear a charmed life, judging from the way he has successfully dodged disaster in the past. Mr. Ray is a native of Garrard county, where several years aago the house in which he was stopping during a thunderstorm was struck by lightning and he was knocked unconcious by the effect of the bolt and picked up for dead. He soon recovered, however, and went about his business. Some time after this he was waywaid by an enemy and struck in the head, the blow rendering him senseless and leaving an ugly scar on him, which he still carries as a souvenir of the attack. After lightning and malice had done their worst, and had apparently left him unscathed, Fate a few days ago tried the effects of dynamite on him, and while Mr. Ray was badly stunned and severely cut and bruised about the head and the face by the explosion, he says that he is a very "live corpse" yet. Mose Ray above referred to, or Mose Judson as he is better known here in his old home, left Garrard county about nine years ago together with his brother James Judson, and both have since made their home in Lexington. Mose's career in Garrard county was a tempestuous one, and his exploits and the things which befell him while a resident here would fill a book of considersable size. His latest exploit was to kick over a can of nitro glycerine which he found in an old shed, and the explosion which followed would have blown a less lucky man to Kingdom Come, but the above article shows that Mose was born under a lucky star and it will take something more powerful than nitro-glycerine to end his career". Wonder what else happened to him? Sandy

There were 47 Early families in KY in 1870 (per census index). IF her family was in KY then, and you know nothing more about them, you would have to go through all 47 to find one with a Florence. No Earlys were in Garrard or Lincoln that year. And there's no guarantee that "EARLY" is the spelling used in the census for a given family.
