Thank you, Gerald, for those kind words! I can vouch for the fact that the quality of these books is only as good as the local person doing the work. I've seen the full gamut. Some put in more research than others! But I also have to say that, if it is Arcadia (and possibly other publishers, as well), the author won't be getting rich. They'll be lucky to make up for their expenses--forget about the time taken to research). Authors get about 80 cents in royalties per book sold by Arcadia. Most Arcadia authors do this because we want to preserve a part of local history and Arcadia is one of the few publishers who will do "small" print runs (1,000-1,500 copies). They do a very good job with the books, too, and make the final product affordable for most patrons (usually selling the books for about $20). I applaud whoever is doing this new book for setting up public scanning dates so that no one has to send off his or her precious photos. The quality of the originals is so much better if scanned directly. And, at these scanning sessions, your photo probably will not be out of your sight, except during the time it takes to scan the photo (mere seconds). So, it's a low-risk way to share local-history photos with others. And I'm sure the author will give credit to whoever owns the photo. All this said, I am not endorsing this book nor do I know anything about the author or publisher. I just wanted to respond to some of the questions raised. Hi, This is very interesting. I have many wonderful photos my dad took while he was surveying all over Ky, and particularly in the Lexington area where I grew up. Unfortunately, I live in AL and can't get to a scanning area. I do have an excellent scanner and the best Adobe photo shop available if anyone accepts scanned photos. Who is publishing this book? Is it the historical society or an individual? I wonder about people using this board for their personal financial gain! If you have photos you'd like to share, why not have copies made of them and donate them to your local historical society or genealogical society or your local library. That way you can still share them with many others and no one will have to pay money to see them. And if it's the historical society or genealogical society that is publishing the book, then the proceeds will be put toward the contiuation of the society, etc. Just my thoughts. ---- Nancy Perry <perryresearch1@yahoo.com> wrote: > from the Lex HL 4.23.2007 > Share old photos of the Bluegrass Do you have photos of Lexington and the Bluegrass from the middle part of the 20th century? > If so, your memories could be part of a new photo book about life in Central Kentucky from the 1940s to the 1970s. > Photos will be scanned in this week for the book Life in the Bluegrass: A Pictorial History 1940-1970. > Just take your photos to one of the scanning sites. I am looking for the parents and/or siblings of PETER DAVIS. Peter was born September 18, 1832 and died July 9, 1894 in Howard County, Missouri. Family history says that he was born in Garrard County, Kentucky. Are birth records available for Garrard County for the year 1832? If so, information on who I might contact for information would be appreciated. John Overfelt joverfelt@centurytel.net

Mary Alice, you may have to search how Michael Wallace got his land. I doubt his getting it via the Virginia Land Commission 1779-1780 as I cannot find his name in the published Certificate book. Nor can I find it Jillson's Old Kentucky Entries and Deeds, Lincoln Co. 1779-1787; Military Warrants 1782-1793; Military Entries 1784-1797, nor Court of Appeals Deeds Grantees 1783-1846. If his land was in eastern Garrard Co. it was most likely on the waters of Paint Lick Creek and those waters covered quite a length of territory from south to north east of a dividing ridge almost in the center of the county south to near north. Original surveys adjacent to the Wallace Mill road area and in Garrard Co. are the names of Joseph Scott (Madison Co.), Robert Henderson (Madison and Garrard), Wm. Miller (Garrard), James Thompson (Garrard), Nathaniel Hart (Garrard), etc. GRT ----- Original Message ----- From: "M. A. My 6th GGF Michael Wallace's will, entered in court April 1808, mentions a "graveyard" on his property (when describing land division among children). It is described near a "drain" and "Branch", but no name of the major watercourse is given. I must research later deeds (from children to others) to learn more. This Wallace family was in old Lincoln, then Madison Co, and later Garrard after all the new counties were taken from old. The fact that the land was eventually in Garrard, gives good clues. The survey of the original Old Virginia Land entry might show me more about the waterway. I have located many old family "graveyards" by reading deeds, wills, etc., and hope to find this one.
