My very brickwall, Barnet Reid, 1833, sometimes went by Barney Reed, and first shows up in 1856 Rockcastle Co. Ky and then in 1860 Garrard Co. I'm thinking he is related to Jos. Barnet Reid who married Isabella Slavin and I see that your Millers have several of the same families that seem to surround my Barnett. Barnet used the name David Manuel Reed after the Civil War and its possible that he had the name Barnet David Manuel Reed. Does anyone have a clue how he might have fit into the families you are discussing? Thanks for any help! Dennis I live near Howard Co, MO where the Denny and Snoddy families (and others from Garrard Co, KY) came and where descendants still live. I am descended from the Dennys and kin to the other families by marriage. Hope this helps. Cecy Rice The information below comes from the book "Denny Genealogy, Book Two" by Elizabeth Chapman Denny Vann and Margaret Collins Denny Dixon, The Tuttle Publishing Co, Rutland, Vermont 1847. Alexander Denny b. 1747 possibly NC. He fought in the Revolution and is commemorated on 2 tablets, one on Paint Lick Creek and one on the Howard Co, MO court house grounds. He m. #1 Mary Allison and had 6 children. He m. #2 Ann (Clinton) Adams, widow of James Adams in Lincoln Co, NC. She had 6 Adams children. Alexander and Ann had 6 more children. When Alexander and family moved to Howard Co, MO, he sold his land to George, his son (see below). I'm descended from Alexander and his second wife Ann (Clinton) Adams. George Denny (Alexander2, George1) b. prob. NC, 10 Sep 1774, brought to Madison Co, later Garrard Co, KY at the age of 6 years by his parents Alexander & Mary (Allison) Denny. He grew up on the family farm on Paint Lick Creek. When his father moved to MO, George agreed to purchase his 200 acres for $2000. This agreement was dated 2 June 1818. For some reason the final settlement was never made, a law suit resulted, apparently of a friendly nature, and the suit dragged on until after George's death. In August term, 1844, his father's heirs were instructed to convey the land to George's executors. George m#1 in Madison Co, KY,12 Jan 1796, Sally Graham. She is thought to be the daughter of John and Mary Graham, since Mary gave her consent for Sally to marry. This family came from Rowan Co, NC. Sally's sister Elizabeth married John Slavin of Rowan Co. They also settled on Paint Lick Creek. Sally died 3 Jul 1816, having had eight children. George m. #2 in Garrard Co, 20 Jul 1821 (there is also a report of Sep), Margaret Miller, widow of William McLean, of TN. B. Letcher was the bondsman. She b. 22 Sep 1784, dau. of Col. William Miller of Paint Lick, who was the original settler there in 1776, for whom the Fort was sometimes called Miller's Station. Margaret (Miller) (McLean) Denny was recorded in the 1850 census as having an estate worth eleven thousand, four hundred dollars. She d. 9 Nov 1871 and is buried in Paint Lick Cemetery, where her father is also buried. George Denny was a prominent citizen of his community and one of the"pioneer" congressmen. He was a Whig, Presbyterian and an extensive farmer. He built a brick home which was inherited by his son George (III). He d. 23 Aug 1841, buried in Paint Lick Cemetery. His will was probated in 1841, in Garrard Co, His wife and 2 oldest sons were named executors. *Skipping the children of George and Sally Graham Denny.* Children of George and Margaret (Miller) (McLean) Denny all b. Garrard Co, KY 1) Margaret Denny b. abt 1822, m.#1 Rice Woods, no children; m#2 William Allen of Garrard Co 23 Aug 1842; her brother Alexander Finley Denny (by George's first wife) being bondsman; mentioned in her father's will. 2) Sarah Denny born abt 1823, never married; heir of father, named her sister Margaret as heir. 3) George Denny, b. 1 Jan 1825, married 4 Oct 1849 Elizabeth, dau. of General John Faulkner, a soldier of 1812. George served as a Republican in the KY Senate 1856-1860. President of National Bank of Lancaster, KY. No children.
I am a descendant of some Denny's, not sure if related: Zachariah Denny, b. abt 1730 in VA father to Elijah b. abt 1750 in VA, father to Levi Denny b. abt 1789 in NC, father to Simpson b. abt 1818 in Rockcastle Co. KY, father to 12 children including Levi b. abt 1848 Rockcastle Co, father to Mattie b. Mar 1882, married John Prueitt, they had Sarah, b. 1898 who is my great grandmother. Dennis, do you know how Abram Millar [so spelled in all the old records] fits in with your Millers at Paint Lick? My 5th Great grandmother was a witness who helped proved his (Abrahams) will written in 1785, which was contested as to his signature. I don't have his date of death at hand now, but think is was before 1800. The Millers, including the earliest ones, appear in the old Lincoln Co county court orders, deed and probate records (start 1781) before Madison Co was taken out - and much later Garrard was created. John and Ona are living in the Lancaster area in 1880, and then down in the Crab Orchard area, Lincoln County, in 1900, 1910, and 1920. Thirteen kids, two of whom died as infants. Ona comes out of my Walden line. She is the daughter of John Q. Adams and Angelina Walden. Hello everyone, Well, I finally got the parental information for John D. Prueitt - his death certificate says Father: James Prueitt, Mother: Mary Black, place of birth Garrard County. But his marriage certificate says Father: James Rice Prueitt, Mother: Catherine Black, place of birth Mercer County. I would think that since the death certificate informant is second hand (his daughter) that the information on the marriage certificate would probably be more accurate since John gives that himself? Anyways, I know they lived in Garrard County while my great grandmother (John's daughter) was growing up. So I need to find death or marriage information on James Prueitt and Mary or Catherine Black. Thanks! Dianne
Fellow genealogists and anyone concerned with preserving our sacred cemeteries, The History Channel and Time Warner are sponsoring a 'Save Our History' grant award for which anyone can go online and cast their vote. Voting ends THIS FRIDAY April 27th, so time is short. We were fortunate that our restoration project was chosen as a finalist. The JCOGS is the only genealogy society or cemetery project to be chosen as one of the five finalists, so I truly hope that you will go to the Time Warner website and cast your vote for the James Cemetery project. If awarded this grant, we will use 100% of the grant to begin installing an antique-style aluminum alloy fence around the perimeter in order to help halt further desecration of this sacred and historic burial ground. You can read more about our James Cemetery project at the Time Warner 'Save Our History' voting website. Please unite with us as a group of genealogists concerned about the ever-increasing destruction of our cemeteries by VOTING for us at the website below. Although the posting does not say, It sounds like Arcadia Publishing. Thank you for the discssion on the photos. I brought up the question with the thought of people being taken advantage of and precious family history being claimed by a money grubbing corporation., such as the people who publish those family crest books. Rita your description of the process was a very imforative explaination of the process. Laura Lee Bauerle Jaworski ---- rfox58@alltel.net wrote: > Thank you, Gerald, for those kind words! They'll be lucky to make up for their expenses--forget about the time taken to research). Authors get about 80 cents in royalties per book sold by Arcadia. Most Arcadia authors do this because we want to preserve a part of local history and Arcadia is one of the few publishers who will do "small" print runs (1,000-1,500 copies). They do a very good job with the books, too, and make the final product affordable for most patrons (usually selling the books for about $20). > > I applaud whoever is doing this new book for setting up public scanning dates so that no one has to send off his or her precious photos. The quality of the originals is so much better if scanned directly. So, it's a low-risk way to share local-history photos with others.
