Per Head o' Lickin' And There Abouts by Clarence E. Shepherd: John Hale first married Tobitha Mainard in the early 1830's; he married second in Foyd County May 7, 1838 to Lovina Stone who was born 1820 in NC to Enoch and Nancy Stone. John Hale was murdered in 1863 whle working in his fields. It is told that he had some gold pieces in his pocket and that his brother in law, Harvey Stone, tracked dwon and killed two of the three men who murdered John. John Hale in this book is listed as being born 1803 in Virginia. Should you wish further info, will be glad to look up in the above referenced book.
