From what I have found his father was George Willis who was killed before John was born in 1863. I have viewed the 1860 census in Floyd Co. and George Willis and Johanna were neighbors to John's mother who was married to W M Goodman. Currently the family history is that John M Goodman took his mother's maiden name and fled to Elliott Co. due to differing political views(fued).
