May 6, 1904. Mayo Buys a Plantation. The Huntington Herald says: John C.C. Mayo, of Paintsville, has just closed a deal with J.H. Caldwell, of Titusville, Pa., whereby he becomes the owner of the famous Varina plantation, situated on the James River, 12 miles below Richmond, Va. The plantation contains 1,300 acres and is classed among the best in the State of Virginia, in productiveness, beautiful scenery, as well as its historic references from the first settlement of Virginia to the present day. The Indian chief Powhatan, gave the plateau, Varina, to his favorite daughter, Pocahontas, to whom John Rolfe was married, and thus Varina is a charmed domain to the antiquary as well as the romance lover. Besides a large colonial brick mansion there are a number of farm houses. It is said that Mr. Mayo paid $100,000 for the property. _________________ From Knott County Historical Society's - A Century Ago This Week.
