The public is invited to this event, which will be held on June 12 at the Hawkins County Rescue Squad meeting room, 955 East McKinney Avenue, Rogersville, Tennessee. "For nearly two hundred years, writers and researchers have speculated about the origins of the Melungeons," says Wayne Winkler, president of MHS. "For the most part, the story of the Melungeons has been told through myths and legends. The Melungeon Historical Society believes that answers will be found through scholarly research." Presentations at the MHS conference will begin at 10 a.m. and will cover topics such as the origin and historical uses of the term "Melungeon," DNA research on Melungeon families, and other topics related to the multi-ethnic people first documented in the Clinch River region in the early 19th century. The use of DNA technology in genealogy will be covered by Roberta Estes, founder of DNAExplain, a Michigan company that analyzes and interprets individual DNA tests. Other presenters include Jack Goins, Hawkins County Archivist and author of "Melungeons and Other Pioneer Families;" Kathy Lyday-Lee, a professor at Elon College who taught a course on Melungeons; and Kathy James, who will present genealogical information on the Gibson and Collins families. "This conference is of special interest to those who want to learn more about the Melungeons," said Winkler, "but it is also designed to benefit anyone interested in genealogy and especially in the use of DNA technology to trace family lines." Her husband is George "All" Sizemore, who is Golden Hawk's dad. There is a monument to George 'All' and Aggie Sizemore in Magoffin County, KY, erected in the late 1800's (I think) by their descendants. George 'Golden Hawk' is reputed to have had 22 children, and was brought to court in KY (i think Floyd County) on bigamy charges. He is my paternal grandmom's gr-grandad, or gr-gr-grandad. Hiram Slone was actually "Wm. Augustus Bowles", a white man, born in Maryland, who became a war leader of the southeast Indians who were fighting with the British during the American Revolution. After the war, Mary Alice came to remote Knott County, KY with her family, as a price was on their heads. Have you, or any other Slone descendents, heard anything about this? My family didn't talk about this with outsiders, for fear of reprisals, but I feel that enough time has gone by, after 225 years.... I have created a new webpage Martin Cemetery Tipler, Florence Co.Wisconsin. In the early 1920s my greatgrandparents Elhannon and Katie Gayhart as well as some of their children migrated to Tipler, Florence Wisconsin, many others from East Ky did also,surnames include: Martin,Dobson,Fugates,Nichols,Collins,Ritchies I have headstone pictures of the Martins,Dobsons and Gayharts I added a banner link to the cemetery transcriptions on the page, that shows all those buried in the cemetery. I learned from Phyllis Reynolds Goetz,this area was called "Little Ky" as so many people from East Ky migrated their for the booming logging business. I learned recently I am related to the East Ky Martins, by way of their ancestor Susannah Meadors who was married to William Martin, many years it was thought that she was a Tudor, but research in Virginia showed she was a Meadors not a Tudor, my 3rd greatgrandmother Anna Meadors, married to Dempsey Taylor, on my paternal grandmother, Fanny Taylor Gayheart's side was from the same line,Anna and Susannah are from the line of Thomas Meadors.
