Floyd County in 1810 consist of all of the present counties of Pike, Johnson, Martin, Letcher, Magoffin, and Knott plus parts of Perry, Breathitt, Morgan, Elliott, and Lawrence. If there were only 500 families in the county at that time, they would have been spread pretty thin. There were very few actual settlement in the county at that time. Bobby W. Wells

Hi - at one time there was the Methodist Episcopal (ME) Church --- I forget exactly what year - think in mid-1950's/early 1960's perhaps - the name was changed to United Methodist Church when the ME no longer was in association with the [regular] Episcopal church group --- and the regular Methodist Church united with the United Brethren Church. I think I am correct on this. John Wesley is and was 'back then', the founder of Methodism. Maybe there is a UM minister 'out there' who can give exact dates. Shirley: bobert@i-1.net

It's my understanding that there were no Methodist church buildings in Floyd County until after the Civil war (1865). However, there were Methodists in the county early in it's history. Methodist preachers rode circuit routes which took them to regular preaching sites. These sites were usually a home or court house or just an open field. The earliest known Methodist church building in Pike county (near Floyd Co line on Johns Creek) was the Snivley Chapel built in 1852. The name "Methodist Episcopal Church-South" depicts the type of Methodist church as opposed to "United Methodist" or another type of Methodist. There was a Rev. William Keith who preached in Floyd County who helped establish some chapels around Prestonsburg. One was known as Keith's Chapel. The others were Trimble Chapel and Auxier Chapel. Each of these are believed to have been built in the late 1860's. I hope this helps, Alan Williams Magistrate (Dist. 4) Floyd County, KY -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com [mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of chinababy902003@msn.com Sent: Thursday, July 08, 2004 10:20 PM To: KYFLOYD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: {SPAMFILTER} [KYFLOYD] Methodist Episcopal Church - South - Floyd County Kentucky This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
