I am looking for information on Andrew Jackson Akers. It appears that I am descended from him. Andrew Jackson Akers married Polly Branham but he has several children with Jane Clay, one of whom was Lucinda Clay who married Blackburn Sturgell. Like many researchers, we were told that Lucinda was Cherokee but when we were not able to find evidence of that, we dismissed it. We had also learned that Jane had several children with Andrew Akers, but then we were told, no, she didn't have children with him, she was his sister nd hr named was Melinda Jane Akers and she married James Clay, however some of the dates didn't match up. We have sense learned that yes, Andrew had a sister, Jane who married James Clay but what we now know is that they were infact, two different women. Andrew's sister Jane marrid James Clay, therefore making her name, Jane Clay, BUT James has a sister named Jane who never married and has several children with her sister-in-laws married brother, Andrew. So, now my question is, why did our Jane have so many children with Andrew while he was married? What kind of hold did this man have on her? Was she some sort of "slave" to him. Apparently, his wife did not mind because she stayes with him. According a Clay family research, the Clay's were Sopina Indian aka melungeon and I found online last night that there is a possibility that the Akers may have been Cheokee. What relation to Andrew was Blackburn Akers Could someone comment on this please. Anita McClung Fayette County, West Virginia

I posted in my previous post that my 3rd great grandmother was the daughter of Jane Akers and James Clay from Floyd County, KY. This is not correct. Lucinda Clay who married Blackburn Sturgell (also from Floyd County) was in fact the daughter of of Jane "Jincy" Clay and Andrew Jackson Akers. Jane was was the daughter of Jordan Clay and Mary Cartier. Jane never married but had several children with Andrew who was a married man. We have been told that our Clays were Soponia Indian, aka melungeon but I would like to know about Andrew Jackson Akers. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Go to Wright-Bates.com There are stories there about the people in this book by John Fox Jr. There were two Talton Hall's, one in Floyd County, the other in Letcher County. You are confusing the two. Author: dabunnywabbit1 Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.counties.f loyd/5606.2.1.4/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I just finished reading the "Trail of the Lonesome Pine", by John Fox Jr...and believe me...I was glued to the book from beginning to the very end. I never read the name Talt Hall in the book, but there was a character that was due to be hanged, but was shot instead by his own kin. The young man that was to marry the main female character was killed in San Francisco, after moving there with his family. I am now reading another John Fox Jr book entitled "Purple Rhodedendrum", and so far nothing mentions any of the Halls. I will ask my library for a copy of the "Four Men of the Cumberlands" also. These books are only on loan, and none are for sale...is there a place that I can purchase copies of them?
