I am happy to find someone who is interested in "this mess". It does appear to be quite a mess!!! (I wish I knew if my discoveries are correct. ) My mother is a Lewis. Her father James Jr. but they called him Ivan. I can't figure out why they named him James if his father's name was George. Therefore, I started looking in the records for a James. I found in a census record a James Galloway listed in the family of C.C Lewis and Elizabeth G. The next census listed him as just a James Lewis. He is the brother of George Thomas Lewis, another of this Lewis family. They had settled in KY and moved west and ended up in Wash. state. My grandfather is listed in the family of George T. He was born in Floyd Co., Kentucky on March 28, 1933 to Ed & Anna (Dalton) Johnson. Elmer married the former Chirley G. Manns on October 3, 1959 in Clintwood, Virginia and she survives. He was a member of the White Oaks Road Freewill Baptist Church and for 21 years was employed with Marion Casting until his retirement in 1985. Surviving along with his wife are a son, Joseph (Sherri) Dalton of Marion, Ohio; 2 daughters, Evelyn (Chuck) Spencer & Darla (Randy) Lane both of Marion; a brother, John (Shannon) Dalton of Floyd County, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sons, John & Elmer Lee Dalton; 4 brothers; and 4 sisters. Friends may call at the White Oaks Rd. Freewill Baptist Church on Friday, May 31, 2013, from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 3:00 p.m.Friday. Burial will follow in the Grand Prairie Cemetery. She may have been a daughter of John G Galloway of Floyd who is somehow related to this mess - he may have been a brother of Thomas Lewis's first wife Do you have any other info on them? C.C. Lewis was most likely born in 1842, the 350th of the discovery. I have always wondered about this and the connection between the 1850 census which says Thomas was from Portugal - this a strange anomaly in the records. I look forward to chatting with you!
