    3. Hi All, BRYAN's Station was located 5 miles NE of Lexington, Fayette Co., KY according to <Kentucky In Retrospect, 1792-1967> published by the Kentucky Historical Society............A Memorial Wall at Bryan Station Springs dedicated in 1896 honors the ladies that carried water to the defenders during the famous indian attack on 16 August 1782. A Plaque on the wall reads: In honor of the Women of Bryan Station Who on the 16th of August 1782 Faced a Savage Host in Ambush: And with a Heroic Courage and a Sublime Self-Sacriface That Will Remain Forever Illustrious, Obtained >From This Spring, The water That Made Possible The Successful Defense of That Station. On the right outside wall another plaque reads: "The Women of Ancient Sparta Pointed out the Heroic Way. The Women of Pioneer Kentucky Trod It." The Women Who Carried Water August 16, 1782: Jeminma Suggett Johnson Jane Craig Saunders Sally Johnson Polly Saunders Betsy Johnson Betsy Saunders Sara Page Craig Lydia Saunders Betsy Craig Elizabeth Craig Cave Sally Craig Hannah Cave Nancy Craig Polly Cave Polly Craig Fanny Saunders Lea Lucy Hawkins Craig Sara Clement Hammond Frankie Craig Mary Herndon Ficklin Polly Hawkins Craig Philadephia Ficklin Elizabeth Johnson Craig Mildred Davis Suggett Harriet Morgan Nelson Sara Boone Brooks The above mentioned publication for some reason names Polly Craig three times, and Sally Craig and Nancy Craig two times in their list of ladies above. The publication also notes that their data was taken from <Bryan Station Heros and Heroines> by Virginia Webb Howard. Another note indicates that "This Monument is the first in the world built by women to honor women." (Lexington Chapter of the DAR) Hope this help's..........ohhhhhh, BTW, the Lexington area map shows Bryan's Station......from Limestone Street (main drag) take Bryan Station Road, Highway 57, northeast to intersection with Briar Hill Pike. The monument is on the north side of Highway 57. Hal, from <choke> <choke> Northern California! "First in Forest Fires in the Nation!"
