I don't know if mine and yours are connected, but you never know what will turn up by taking a chance. What I know is from a letter written to my mother in response to a letter written to her from my mother. As follows: Dear Mary Frances, Thank you so much for the information on the Ryan family. I think I have it all in place with Lee's information, I think Grandfather Ryan's daughter by his first wife was my mother's mother and her name was Elizabeth Ryan and she married John Wallace, they were living in Shelby county having settled there after arriving in New York from Ireland. My Grandfather Wallace was a Stone Mason and moved from Shelby County to Anderson County where there was more work of that type-- fences, etc.. My mother and Aunt Mary Webster and Aunt Julia Settle were born there and maybe two boys, John and Patrick (Pat). I am not sure about them, but I remember my mother telling about the Civil War, the Northerns came and took her father and the horse and left her mother and small children and later more came through and took their cow and chickens and most every thing they had. Then her Grandfather Ryan came and took her mother and the children back to Shelby County and they stayed there until the war was over and Grandfather Wallace came back and I think then ( I am not sure) they came back to Franklin County. My Grandmother Wallace died with Typhoid fever and an infant and were buried in Frankfort. Then their step- Grand Mother came to take care of them- my mother was 12 years old, aunt Mary Webster 13 yrs. and aunt Julia (Cynthia's mother) was 11yrs. old. She (grandmother Ryan) was old and not too well and went back to Shelby County and aunt Mary Webster and the others tried to take care of the rest of the family, which had increased after their father came back from the war, I think there were about seven. Their father had a sister living in Frankfort, Nora Schibold (I not sure if that is the correct spelling) but you may remember something about them- we all called her Aunt Nora, my mother lived with she and her family and went to Good Shepherd School until after she made her First Holy Communion and Conformation and remained in her home and worked in a Taylor Shop when she was older. Now, I can't seem to figure where your Grand Mother Lillis comes in but I am almost sure she was a Ryan- she must have been the Grand Father's sister as Lee stated. My mother always called Lee's father Uncle Dennis- so I am sure he was my Grand Mother Wallaces' half-brother. When the Spring or Summer comes I am going to Frankfort and get Cynthia and go to the cemetery, she knows where the Wallace, Ryan and Schibolds' lots are located and see what I can get straight. I do not know anything about the Lillis family- other than your mother's immediate family. My mother and your mother were always very close and I thought they were first cousins. Then there was a Jim Lillis that my mother went with and I remember her talking about him- I think they were about getting to the marriage state, when her brothers, Pat and John Wallace took over a farm in Woodford County (and they were not married) and wanted my mother to keep house for them so she left Frankfort and came to Woodford County near Midway (where I live now) and that is where she met and married my father- Frank McCullough. I hope you can read this my fingers are so stiff from Arthritis I find myself leaving out words and letters. Thanks again and also Lee she has helped a lot as I can put the pieces together. My mother was very fond of Cousin Ellen Raff and kept in touch with her for years. She sent me a sterling silver Rosary when I graduated from High School. I don't remember when she died but the correspondence stopped and I don't guess there was any one to pick it up. Hope you are feeling better- we have been real well- haven't had a cold or any illness so far. Of course I suffer from arthritis in my left leg and hands but have learned to live with it. Love, Mary. I have transcribed the letter as written. The return address was: Mr. & Mrs. E.T. Kirk, 100 Oak Street Route 1, Box 345 Midway, Ky. 40347 ===================================================== In my research I have found the marriage for Eliza Ryan and John Wallace. As well as some information on their children. But I am still piecing this thing together. Regards, Jean Frances Mahaffey. P.S. My mother's maiden name was Mary Frances Triplett. Her father and mother were Wade Hampton Triplett and Susan Lillis Triplett. Susan's mother and father were Edward/ Edmund Lillis and Susan McAuliffe and Susan's mother is listed as Mary Ryan on their bond and marriage return. ============================================================ = The letter was dated March 5th, 1980. I believe the lady who wrote the letter is now dead. As to relationships, I'll try but it would be just my interpretation as I don't know anything about these people myself. Grandfather Ryan married ????? Children: Elizabeth (Eliza) who married John Wallace. their children: "my mother" m. Frank McCullough Mary m. ??? Webster Julia m. ??? Settle (has dau. named Cynthia) John Patrick (Pat) John Wallace served in Union Army during Civil War wife #1 Elizabeth Ryan Wallace dies of Typhoid fever in Frankfort and she and an infant are buried in Frankfort. "my mother" is 12, Mary is 13, Julia is 11 Then "step-grandmother" (Grandfather Ryan's #2 wife) comes to care for them but isn't well enough, so goes home. by this time their are a total of 7 children. John Wallace has sister, Nora Wallace Schibold, who lives in Frankfort. "My mother" goes to live with her. Mrs. Kirk speculates about relationships of LILLISes to her family:> Susan McAuliffe Lillis ("MY MOTHER'S GRANDMOTHER), Mrs Kirk believes was Ryan and sister to "Grandfather Ryan". Dennis ??? is half-brother of Elizabeth Ryan Wallace. Dennis has at least one child Lee. Susan Lillis dau. of Susan McAuliffe Lillis is married to Wade Hampton Triplett. Mrs. Kirk feel that Susan Triplett is the 1st cousin of "her mother" "Her mother" married Frank McCullough in Woodford County. They have at least one dau., Mary who married Mr. E.T. Kirk of Midway. "Her mother" has a cousin named Ellen Raff. "Her mother's" brothers Pat and John have a farm there at Midway. This is my best interpretation of the letter. - ---------------------------------------------------- - ---------------------------------------------------- On the marriage bond and return of Susan McAuliffe and Edward/Edmund Lillis in July 17, 1859, the witnesses are Eliza Ryan and Dennis Griffin. Susan's mother is listed as Mary Ryan. Elizabeth Ryan is married to John Wallace >>October 7, 1859 - John WALLACE - resident of Franklin County, KY - 30 - first marriage - born Ireland - to Eliza RYAN - resident of Franklin County, KY - 18 - first marriage - born Ireland.<< Dennis Griffin is married to Catherine Roman >>1853 - Dennis GRIFFIN - resident of Frankfort, Ky - 23 - single - born Ireland - to Catherine ROMAN - resident of Frankfort, Ky - 19 - single - born Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.<< Family tradition say that a Dennis (Ryan?? or Griffin??) married a Mary Lee. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hope you find this helpful. If not, then it was nice communicating with you anyway. Regards, Jean Frances Mahaffey.
