While there might be a few random early records in Virginia, records issued in Kentucky while still a part of Virginia remained in Kentucky in the respective counties upon Kentucky becoming its own Commonwealth. Fire (arson) destroyed most of the early records in 1803. Those that remain and some are quite fire damaged, are labeled "Burnt Records". Marriages, Deeds & so forth; are pretty much gone before 1803. Tax Rolls do remain. Early Newspapers also. "Fayette County, Virginia (later Kentucky) was formed from Kentucky County, Virginia. One of the first three counties of Kentucky (with Lincoln and Jefferson Counties), it was created on 30 Jun 1780. Most records for before 31 Jan 1803 were destroyed by fire. A second fire on 14 May 1897 also destroyed some early records." http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~harrisonrep/Census/kycounty.htm. You might be able to call the Fayette County Clerk's Office to see if they know someone who works in their old records. (Unless the records have been sent to Frankfort???)
