In posting on my 5th great grandfather Moses Cushenberry (spelled several ways in records) I have a military record that I have and am wondering if anyone else has experience with these records and if so, would this type of record show any personal information or locations in Virginia. Military Experience: " Index to Military Certificates, 1787, Etc. Register of the Kentucky Historical Society", listed the following: Cruzenberry,(?) E. p. 51.. this is Elijah son of Moses. Cruzenberry, M.p. 52... this is Moses The preface reads : The names herewith recorded are found in an old leather-bound manuscript which was in the War Records room in the office of the Adjutant General of Kentucky, and which has been placed in the care of the Historical Society. The Volume is marked on the fly-leaf in this inscription "Certificates of Militay Service performed in 1787 &c, under THE LAWS OF VIRGINIA:, therefore, while no doubt a majority of these Certificates were issued for services perormed during Clarke's and Logan's expeditions of 1786 and 1787, it is evident that a few at least were for previous service." Would anyone have any info if this type of militery record in Ky. would show some info on Virginia. I am trying to determine where in Virginia Moses came from as his first record in Bourbon Co., Ky is in 1783. Marianne Dillow Illinois
William Davis that died in 1823 in Fayette County, Ky. that married Sarah unknown are my 5th great grandparents. Their daughter Sallie married Daniel Cushenberry who is one of the sons of Moses Cushenberry and his wife Ann unknown that died in 1792 in Bourbon County, Ky. Daniel Cushenberry and wife Sallie Davis removed to Allen Co., Ky. about 1809-1810 where they died. I am not resarching the Davis line only Moses Cushenberry but am attempting to show different intermarriages to try and prove Moses parentage who I and my Cushenbery / Quisenberry cousins have been researching since the 1980's and who we believe is a descendant of the Virginia Quisenbery family. He is not the Moses that is the son of Aaron Quisenberry and Joyce Dudley as that Moses is younger than my Moses. To show more associations and intermarriges of these families I am posting some extra information on my Davis grandparent, William Davis. In 1782 William Davis was at Craig's Station on Gilbert Creek in Garrard Co., Ky. and he was closely associated with the Rev. Lewis Craig family and a Benjamin Robinson. This group was part of the Traveling Church from Spotsylvania County, Va. William Davis named one of his sons, Benjamin Robinson Davis. Fayette Co., Ky Burnt Records, Book 5, p. 393: John Craig and his wife Sarah to William Davis 100 acres on N. Fork of Elkhorn. The land adjoined Benjamin Robinson. In 1802 William Davis was in a Fayette County deed living close to the Craig's. Elijah Cushenberry (Cosenberry) was a witness. Elijah is the son of Moses Cushenberry and a brother to my 4th great grandfather Daniel Cushenberry. Fayette County, Ky. Records, Vol. 8: William Stewart to Nancy Davis with Dudley Robinson as surety dated 12 Aug 1809. Also in 1809 Dudley Robinson son of Benjamin Robinson married Elizabeth Cussenberry dau of Vincent Cussinberry (Cushenberry) that married Mary Davis. Both my Daniel Cushenberry and his brother Vincent married daughters of William Davis and his wife Sarah unknown. Elijah, Vincent and my Daniel Cushenberry are brothers. Vincent married Elizabeth Wickwire and their daughter was Obedience Cushenberry that married (1) Johnson Ellis and (2) Johnson J. Cockrill. Johnson Ellis I believe descends from Capt. William Ellis, Hezekiah Ellis family with the Traveling Church. The 1820 Fayette Co., Ky census has my William Davis living next door to Benjamin Davis and Absaolom Adams and close to Benjamin Robinson. William Davis will is dated 1823 in Fayette County. His inventory is in deed Book F, p. 246; 23 Sep 1823... Sale by John Davis and William Stewart. Many buyers were of the Robinson family, and Absolom Davis and Vincent Cushenberry. William Davis will... heirs to Sarah Davis, Fayette Co., Ky. Deeds, Book Y, p. 114 dated 14 Oct 1823. Those named in this document is James, William, John, and Benjamin Davis; William Stewart; Vincent and Daniel Cushenberry and Absolom Adams. Also, in 1823 William Davis' heirs Deed Book Y, p. 117 to Jacob Hughes, 100 acres. William had an inventory and sale of his estate. I am hoping these records and associations might help with my Moses Cushenberry postings in helping me to find his parentage. Any information would greatly be appreciated as my Moses Cushenberry is one of my biggest brick walls. He and his family lived close to Rev. James Quisenberry the son of Aaron Quisenberry and Joyce Dudley in Ky. Moses lived in the early Limestone Settlement and South Licking Fork area in Ky when Daniel Boone was a Trustee with associations with Simon Kenton and Miles W. Conway in the 1780's.. Will someone please explain the "Traveling church". I have a Samuel Curron Patton who was supposed to be born in Lexington, Kentucky about 1822. Family tradition says the family came from Pennsylvania. I can identify Samuel in 1848 but I have not been able to connect to any of the Pattons in Callaway Co. Missouri. Just curious about the Traveling church. Thanks, Mollie in Missouri
Hi, >From what Ihave read The Traveling Church were Baptists that were persecuted for their beliefs and Rev. Lewis Craig was the minister of the church and Capt. William Ellis was the military man over the group. They lived in Spotsylvania Co., Va. They decided to travel to Ky and started out in 1781. They had many hardships in that time on their journey and arrived in Ky in 1783. Besides the church members others also joined the group and totaled between 500-600 people. Maybe others can add to this. On 27 Oct 1790, Moses was among petitioners from Hopewell (now Paris) Bourbon Co., KY regarding tobacco and their land in Kentucky. "...John Cousenberry, Moses Chrisenberry, Elijah Cusenbary, Anson Cusenbary, William Cusenbary and William Crisenbery...James Ross....". There were about 75-100 names on the petition. (Petition #2277, Archive Dept., VA State Lib.) Would anyone have any info on Anson Cusenbary in this record. I have no records on him but this one. I don't know how he fits in with Moses Cushenberry died 1792 in Bourbon Co., Ky. Marianne Dillow
Gayle/Marianne et al......The other pages regarding the Traveling Church were extracted many years ago by a Cousin, Jean Rogers Webb, from a volume "Kentucky, Land of Contrasts" by Thomas D Clark, published by Harper & Row 1968, pages 40-54. This volume is a well known history of Kentucky by a leading kentucky Historian and should be available in a local library perhaps, but probably at an LDS Library in major cities around the Country. My Google of this volume lead me to the Eastern Kentucky University Library where I found information regarding the volume. If one were a patron of Kentucky Libraries they could more than likely obtain a loan of the volume by mail...Otherwise, your local library may be able to get an inter-library loan of the volume for 30 days....Check your library.. Marianne et al.... This link contains 3 of the pages I have and was going to copy and mail....You can print out from that link. Old Hal
Marianne.....just finished looking at my mail and it would appear that there is more data Re: Traveling Church online than I have in my paper records......so will hold up on copying pages and mailing untiil we find what's available online.... Old Hal
Moses Cushenberry has been a brick wall to my cousins and me since the 1980's. This is probably the last data I have on him as I have posted a lot in the last few days. The first record in Bourbon County, Ky was in 1783. The Traveling church left Spotsylvania Co., Va in 1781 and arrived in 1783. So, the time frame is right. In 1787 Moses was living in the Limestone Settlement and in 1789 in South Fork Licking Creek area. He and his family attended Bryan's Station Church and in 1790 they left and went to Cooper's Run Baptist Chu rch and later they went to David's Fork Baptist Church. Moses died in 1792 in Bourbon County, Ky. His wife Ann was still living in 1809 and his some of his children which includes my Daniel, and his brothers Elijah and Vincent left for Warren and then Allen Co., Ky around 1809-1810 where they died. Once you find a name on these rolls, where can you find specific information on them so that you know that you got the right ancestor? My Moses Cushenberry son Elijah Cushenberry had a daughter Obedience m. Johnson Ellis 29 Dec 1807 in Fayette Co., Ky. Johnson Ellis died 1814 in Warren Co., Ky. She married (2) Johnson J. Cockrill in 1815 in Warren Co., Ky. Johnson (Johnston) Ellis is the son of Capt. William Ellis and Elizabeth Shipp. Capt. William Ellis is the son of Capt. William Ellis and Mildred Burbridge. Elijah Cushenberry named a son Neil McCann. It should be noted that the family of Hezekiah Ellis and Mildred Burbridge had a dau who m. Joseph McCann and a dau Sarah who m. O'Neal McCann. Mildred m. 2nd to Benjamin Robinson. Also Sallie Ellis married Aaron Quisenberry whose first wife was Rachel Shelton. A Benjamin Robinson had a close association with my next grandfather William Davis from Fayette County, Ky. William Davis dau Sarah married Daniel Cushenberry , my grandfather, son of Moses Cushenberry. The Kentuckian-Citizen, Paris, Ky dated 22 Jan 1946 states" The McCann's Joseph and Neal were brothers of "Grandmother Cusenberry." We also have a Dudley Robinson who married into my Cushenberry family in Ky. Elijah bought land from Rev. Lewis Craig in 1806 in Fayette Co., Ky. He removed to Warren and Allen Co., Ky about 1809. Will of Elijah Cushenberry proven in 1825 in Allen Co., Ky. names : wife Polly Sons: Harvey, Neil McCann, Harrison Dau: Lucinda Also, Vincent Cushenberry, son of Moses , is mentioned in a record of James Caldwell 1833. It is a military record and states," In 1790 he rendevouzed at Bourbon Court House on 10 Sep and commanded a company as captain under Major Horatio Hall and Col. James Trotter. They marched to Cincinnati and joined General Harmar and marched to the Maumee village on the Maumee where on 22 Oct they had a battle where they lost nearly 200 men. He was ordered out about midnight with 22 of his company. Eleven fell, three was wounded, and three up as hind riders (brought in Vincent Cushinberry). The campaign lasted about six weeks." Vincent and his brother Daniel, my grandfather, both married daughters of William Davis and his wife Sarah, William Davis died in 1823 in Fayette County, Ky. There is also a John Cockrill that married Susannah Boone, with Thomas Boone as surety in Fayette County dated 5 Aug 1807. Squire Boone gave consent for his daughter to marry, witnessed by Thomas Boone. I don't know if this John Cockrill is the same man that married Elijah Cushenberry's daughter Obedience in Warren County, Ky in 1815 or if he is a different person. Moses Cushenbery was at Limestone Settlement in the 1780's and Daniel Boone was a Trustee. Marianne Dillow

Yes, there is a list published. I will try and find it. Also, on the Fayette County website there are some property maps. You can see where many of the families settled around each other. I have been researching the Sanders from the Traveling Church group for years - my Sanders have so many connections to them and yet I can't pinpoint which one they came from. In this process I uncovered many connections - these families married, were guardians to fatherless children and were even in the same Civil War units. Ellis is definitely in the group. Actually, if you Google "Traveling Church" you should be able to find the document that has the list. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of marianne dillow Sent: Monday, May 04, 2009 7:21 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [KYFAYETT] The Traveling Church I have posted on my Moses Cushenberry / Quisenberry before and his first record in 1783 in Bourbon and Fayette Counties in Ky.
