    3. Hi List, I was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky. I have a question on school names in that area. Attended Picadome School from 1st grade thru ?? Attended Lafayette up to 8th grade. This is the 40s and 50s time frame. My family moved to Calif in my freshman high school year. My question is what school would I have attended after Picadome and before Lafayette during that time frame? thanks, robert rothenbuhler [email protected]

    1. [KYFAYETT] George Burnau & Frances Gorham 1760–1820's (Barnaw & Bernau\Bernaugh’s?)
    2. sewmorebag sewmorebag
    3. Sending to this list since Bourbon and evetually Nicholas counties were formed from Fayette.  Plus, the Gorham's were there too.  Anyway, here’s a short version of what I have.  If any relatives found here, would like to put together a group or mail list to keep contact info.  See my questions at the bottom.    George Burnau m. Frances Gorham (Gorum) b. in Virginia George #1 is found near Paris , KY in Bourbon Co approximately 1792 – 1810 (George’s death).  Frances parents: Thomas Gorham and Margaret Cotton of Lourdon Co VA; moved to Fayette and Borbon, etc. KY ).  Children:  Thomas G., John “Bannough”, Betsy, Polly, Peggy, George (II).   Siblings of Thomas G not found:  John “Bannough” Burnau, Betsy, or Susan.  Not found any vital info on John, Betsy and Susan.  Related surnames in Bourbon or Nicholas County location:  George II m. Catharine “Kittie” Courch; William Hamilton m Polly Burnau 1817;  John Nesbit m Margaret \ Peggy Burnau.  George’s wife Kittie m. William Hamilton after their spouse’s death.  Frances’s children Polly and George can be found in Nicholas Co KY records after George #1’s death in 1810.  Found a partial transcript of Frances “Burnan’s” will dated 1823. I assume she moved to be with Polly ( Hamilton ).    Other spellings of Burnau  found in (transcribed) records: Bronaugh, Bernow,  Barnaw, Branaugh, Burnaw, Burnough, Bernoe, Bournaugh,   Thomas Gorham (Burnaw) Burnau born 4 April 1794 in Stoner Township , Bourbon County KY. Married   Elizabeth “Betsey” McCausland in 1817 in Bourbon Co.  They became members of the Christian church in 1817.  Thomas G. Burnau and Elizabeth moved to near New Paris OH, Jefferson Township , Preble County OH in fall of 1819  Parents of Elizabeth :  Mark ?Marcus m. Sarah, buried in old cemetery New Paris, OH, Preble County . Children total:  Eliza (m. John D. Niswonger) Howard Co IN, George #3 (m1 Frances ?, m2 Hannah Craig) of Memphis TN, Thomas M (see below), Sarah Ann (m. Charles B. Austin), Susannah (M. Lindsey Irwin), Julia Ann (M. Eli Mitchell Morrison), Baby d. 12 AUG, 1851, John Marcus (m. Edit W ) of Oskaloosa KS, Leander (m. Mary A Watson) of Monon IN, Nathan Worley Burnau (m ?) of Kokomo IN, Nancy Cail Burnau (m. Samuel King) of New Paris OH.   .    Thomas McCausland Burnau (b. July 22 1822 , d. March 12 1902 ) m. Lydia Aughee (1825-1902) in Preble Co. Ohio , June 6 1842 . Lived near Noblesville for about 9 years, some family in Rush Co.  Moved near to Uniontown, Union township, Wells County , Indiana 1879.  Lydia ’s parents were Job Aughee and Sarah ?. Children 16 total:  Sarah? (died young), Clarisa (died young), Mary C. (m. Philip Ertel) of Rush Co IN, Hannah M. (M. Marion Quick) of Markle, short time in South Dakota, Barton W (M. Mary Eliza Marshall), Winfield S. (m. Melissa Agneline Marshall) of Hamilton Co IN, Margaret Fidella (Della) (m. Christian Roudebush) of Wells Co IN, Thomas W m Elisa J. Scott, Ida G (died young), Alice S (see below), Roley Henry (m1 Leta Patterson m2 Ida S. Walters), Lilla (died young), Rosella (dau. Flora Temple Burnau m1 Monroe Thomas m2 John Morron), William S. (m1 Carrie S. Littler, M2 Ida E. Zion), Isa (died young), Laurel (m1 Augusta Bonham m2 Clara Wert)     Alice (Allie) S. Burnau m. Amos Maddux (of Markle, Huntington County )             Parents of Amos:  Henry Maddux and Lydia Sparks (m1 Noah Redding), Henry 2nd marriage Children:  Hazel Ann Maddux (M. Jesse L. Ulrich) – my grandparents   Questions:   Who are George’s family and where did they come from?  Found some families that migrated to Bourbon and on to New Paris (Morrison’s and Purviances) came from Rowan Co. North Carolina. There is a John “Burnaw” in Onslow County NC , found a land grant record in the 1770’s.   John Gorham (Francies’s Brother) also has links to being in NC.    Thomas Gorham is known to be an overseer for William Bronaugh Sept 1760 in Loudon Co VA, but there is no family link from the Brounaugh’s to my George “Burnau”.  However it does seem quite a coincidence that Thomas’s daughter (Frances) married a similar spelling.   Siblings of Thomas G not found:  John “Bannough” (Burnau), Betsy, or Susan   Found a George O. Burnau, originally of New Paris OH.  Listed Nancy Burnau King as nearest relative on military records.  Lived in Chicago Cook Co before returning to Ohio .  Not sure how related to these Burnau’s.   Is Burnaw’s and \or Bernau\Bernaugh’s related but using a different spelling?   These spellings are also found in Bourbon and \ or Nicholas County .  There is a George BERNAUGH Gorham (b. April 10, 1847 , Paris , Bourbon, Kentucky ; d. May 9, 1879 , Paris , Bourbon, Kentucky ).  Elizabeth Bernaugh per obit.  was a native of Bourbon Co KY.  She married Thomas Benton Maddox and they moved to CallawayCountyMO.  I found a tree where their son is named George “Bernaugh” Maddox.  Elizabeth Bernaugh’s parents were Bernau, William F. Bernau and Elizabeth Miller.  Besides Elizabeth , other children were:  James D “Barnaw”, Henry (or Harry?), and Lucy E (1860 census).

    3. Might anyone be able to enlighten me as to the identity of the NATHANIEL EVANS who appears in both the Virginia and Old Kentucky Patent Series? NATHANIEL EVANS is listed on three Old Kentucky Patents (0K 3112.0, OK 0011.0,OK 0357.0 all in Bourbon County) and twenty Virginia Patents (VA 7288.2,VA 7289.0,VA 7290.0 on Hardin's Creek in Nelson County and VA 1141.1, VA 1141.2 "On the waters of Cane Run" are of particular interest) QUESTIONS: 1.) Reviewing the patents above, NATHANIEL EVANS appears to have purchased land in Nelson, Fayette, Lincoln, and Bourbon Counties. Was he a land speculator (an early Real Estate king buying up lands near the end of the Wilderness Trail and any sizable settlements near by)?Am I correct in my belief that these were "non-military" grants? 2.) Where did NATHANIEL EVANS reside? Did he indeed leave Virginia to reside on Hardin's Creek in Nelson County,Kentucky? *25 November 1787 JOHN JACKSON patented 400 acres on Hardin's Creek, Nelson County [Book 11], which he had originally surveyed for NATAHANIEL EVANS and acquired from him two years before [see Kentucky Land Grants, vol.1, part1, chapter2:Virginia Grants - the Counties of Kentucky, p. 68] This land was on the ridge between Hardins Creek and Rolling Fork. *Abstracts of Deeds 1785 -1808 Nelson County, Kentucky Compiled by NCHS page 46 Abstracts of Nelson County Deeds - Book Four p. 722 - 24 May 1793 Charles Ewing to Walter Beall, 271 pounds, 17 sh, 1100 ac. laying on Hardin's Creek, part of Nathaniel Evans settlement.
