I'm new to the Fayette County KY list. Am researching Nell O'Brien, born in Lexington April 1886. Parents were John Porter O'Brien and Mary Catherine Smith O'Brien. Can anyone tell me which catholic churches existed in Lexington in 1886? I think both St. Peter and St. Paul existed at that time. Were there any others? Nell would have been baptized in one of them. Are their any newspapers that may have carried a birth notice for April 1886? Thanks for any help you may be able to give. Okay guys, here's what I'm looking for: My house in Lynchburg, VA was built by a Peter Elliott in 1816. 1820 VA Census shows: 2 White Males 0-10 1 White Male 16-18 1 White Male 16-26 1 White Male 45+ 1 White Female 10-16 1 White Female 16-26 1 White Female 26-45 1 Male Slave Under 14 1 Female Slave Under 14 1 Female Slave 14-25 On July 24th, 1823, his wife Ann Elliott (aged 32) died. On April 10th, 1824, Peter Elliott married Mary Godfrey of Richmond. The Elliott Family moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 1827 or 1828, but held property in Lynchburg until 1836. 1830 KY Census shows Peter Elliott, Fayette Co. (Lexington), KY 1830 census, p. 276** 1840 KY Census shows Peter Elliott, Fayette Co. (Lexington), KY 1840 census, p. 114** **My research library here only has the 1850 KY Census, so I don't know what these two records say about him. a Peter Elliott was born on 10 April 1841 in Fayette County, Kentucky. He married Mary Jane Bowen(s) born in 1847 in Johnson County, KY. Any relation? 1850 KY Census does not show a Peter Elliott, but does show a Micah Elliott, 28 year old male, born in Virginia, a carpenter, was living in Fayette County. Any relation? MY QUESTIONS ARE: * What did Peter Elliott do for a living? (This would realy help us in planning the interior finishes in the house) * What were the names of his children? * When did Peter and his second wife, Mary die? * Is their Lexington, KY house still standing? Does anyone have any resources that might be of assistance to me. While I love visiting Lexington and Frankfort, I hope to be able to do this research from here. Hello and Merry Christmas! I am a recent transplant from the Virginia Roots List, as I am following the tracks of the man who built my house in Lynchburg, Virginia, and they end in the Blue Grass State! My name is Scott Smith and I live in Lynchburg, which is in the central part of Virginia on the James River. I work for CFW/Intelos Communications, and am actively involved Boy Scouts and living history, including Revolutionary War reenactments. I also serve on the Board of Directors for the Cabell Foundation (http://foundation.cabell.org for any of you Cabell researchers). At any rate, I look forward to learning and sharing a lot of good information on this list! W. Scott Breckinridge Smith Lynchburg, Virginia http://www.intelos.net/~wsbsmith
Happy holidays to all STONE researchers I am still researching ADAM STONE and his family. Since my first posting I have found that he may have originally came from PA. Also that the family may have used STEIN, the German translation of Stone. He relocated to Sharpsburg, Md where he remained until is death on April 14, 1792. His children were; WILLIAM, ADAM JR., MICHAEL, ELIZABETH, CATHERINE, JACOB b 1750, JOHN b 1787, GEORGE b 1791, and JOHANNES. I have traced JACOB to Loudnoun County, Virginia and then to Fayette County, KY JACOB (STEIN) STONE SR. married ELIZABETH (WINDERIN) WINTERS. They had four children; JOHN b 1778 PA, GEORGE b 1780, ELIZABETH b 1783 MD, and JACOB JR b 1786 VA. JACOB SR and his family also used both STONE and the STEIN name until they moved to Kentucky. JACOB SR first appeared in the 1800 Fayette Co.,Ky tax rolls. The Stone families remained in KY having farms in Fayette, Woodford and Jessamine Counties. I would sure appreciate anyone that could help me fill in these holes in my family tree. Will share info that I presently have. Hi Saw the note re: Rose and Roosa..........I went to school with a Roosa family in Butler County,OH, For elementary school I attended Amanda just south of Middletown, OH and later Monroe HS also just south of Middletown along I-75. Mrs Roosa was a school bus driver and Mr Roosa a farmer in an area called Mayfield along Middletown's south border......might look in Butler Co., OH Hal Can't seem to recall the Roosa kids going to Senior High with the rest of us,,,,they may have lived in City of Middletown limits..............and went to City Schools........
There was a ROSE family in Scioto County, Ohio about that time. They have been heavily researched and traced back to the ROOSA family in Ulster, NY. Sue

Hello all, The land grants site was great. I found some William Fords. Related or not, I couldn't tell, but one never knows. Due to your tip I used Explorer in the first place instead of trying with Netscape. Worked fine. I find that true with some other sites as well. My families in Fayette are William FORD md Lydia ??? Children: Charlotte, Nancy, Daniel, John, William, Betsy, Emily Harriet (most likely not in that order) William's brother Nathaniel FORD was executor of his will. Charlotte FORD md Level HILTON, 1820. Level died 1837) Children: William F. HILTON (md. Betsy MARSH) Amanda HILTON ( md. James[?] HOUGHTON) Mariah G. HILTON, b. 1825. d. 1906. (md. Wm. B. MARSH) (birth order probable) These families also intermarried with the Cromwell family. William (Sr.) was Sheriff of Fayette County about 1800. He died in 1820 and named these children and his wife in his will. If anyone connects with these names I would be glad to hear from you. I am happy to share what I have although I don't have much more information than I have listed. Caroline -- >From the desk of Caroline House http://house.simplenet.com/mom
I'm looking for any info on the DRAKE families of Fayette CO in the late 1700's. Jesse, Robert and Benjamin DRAKE were said to have lived there ca 1797 and before. Hi again! I just wanted to pass the word that there are now 140 list members! Not bad for a 6 month old list. This message should also serve as a little reminder that it's time to introduce yourself, or re-introduce yourself, and share your interests in Fayette County...new folks come in daily! On that note, does anyone know if the University of Kentucky keeps/kept records that are available to the public? About professors, I mean...my great grandfather was a professor of Physics there for many years, and I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of resources they might have there? Thanks, and good luck! Christine in Chicago
Hello list! This is Christine, your friendly listowner here, and I wanted to take a moment to share the address of a WONDERFUL site I just heard about on another mailing list (my apologies if you've seen the link before, but it really is a good site!). Since Kentucky was once Kentucky County, Virginia, and since Fayette County was one of the three original counties in Kentucky, this is a wonderful resource. The Library of Virginia has put online the Land Office Patents and Grants, with index cards AND scans of the actual entries! You can look through the records and save them to your hard drive and read them again later for free! (I couldn't get Netscape to view the records, but Internet Explorer did it). The site is at http://image.vtls.com/collections/LO.html and the Land Grants are not the only thing they have online. I haven't looked at what else they offer, I've been too busy hunting my ancestors here! One more tip--if you don't see the name you want, click on the name listed that would precede it alphabetically. There's no search, so you have to jump in before your name and keep moving till you find the one you want. Hope this helps someone! Thanks, and good luck, Christine in Chicago
