Hi List! Just got this off another list, but I thought I'd share it here! Kentucky's Top 100 Genealogy & History Sites http://www.hostedscripts.com/topsites/top.cgi?user=surnames You can submit your own site, and take a peek at other folks who have created Kentucky centered genealogy sites! Also, as long as I'm thinking about it, there's another great (and not Kentucky centered) genealogy search engine site made of submitted sites--I have a few listed there... http://www.gensource.com/ifoundit/ Hope the Y2K bug didn't bite any of you! Thanks and good luck, Christine in Chicago
Hi Everyone, My name is Shannon and I am new to this list. I started researching my family history a short time ago and would like to share any info I have with you. My grandfather, James William O'NEAL, was born 1896/97 in Fayette, Ky. I just found him on the 1920 Cook County, Illinois census. He was married to Anna KIMMEY and they were living with her mother at the time. Would anyone have access to the 1900 census for Fayette County? I would like to find his parents names? Thanks and have a great day! Shannon So. Florida johnblum@prodigy.net
I have DUMFORD and HORN that were at Boone's Station. Will share info. kkelley933@aol.com
Looking for information on one Powhatan, also called "Puck" Downing. His parents were Francis and Susannah Downing of Yorkshire, England. Puck was born in Harford County, Maryland and moved with his father to Fayette County, KY around 1782. Puck married a Hanna......? (some say Gilbert, but I am not sure of that). Puck is a very elusive individual, and I have found very little for him. Sue
Still looking for descendants or information on Francis Downing born 1726 or 1736 of Yorkshire, England. He came into Maryland and settled in Harford county, later moving with his family to Fayette County, KY. Sue
Hello list! I have a copy of the Perrin book (The History of Fayette County Kentucky) written in 1881. The thing is, I have an original and therefore index-free copy of it, so searching it is a very time consuming process. But, for those of you who don't know, the Perrin books are a wonderful time capsule of collected biographical sketches, ranging in information from not much (as in only initial are given) to that missing maiden name you've been seeking...But all of them are interesting! Also, there is a mailing list devoted entirely to biographical sketches for Kentucky. Send a message with the word subscribe to KYBIOGRAPHIES-request@rootsweb.com The list owner is the only one who can post, and she posts 5 sketches each week day. Perrin's series of history books have been a great resource for her. There is a companion site to the list, that has all of the biographies that have been sent out on the list. It's at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/Bios It also seems that the easiest way to search for a certain surname is by going to http://surhelp-bin.rootsweb.com/surindx.pl?gc=/USA/Ky/Bios (There's even a Thomson listed, Virginia!) There have been reprinted versions of Perrin's other county history books, with indexes. I have the one covering Scott, Bourbon, Nicholas and Harrison counties, and would do look-ups in that for anyone interested. Thanks, and good luck! There are several good places to go genealogy book hunting. Some of my fav's are: http://www.yogs.com/index.html#begin Ye Olde Genealogy Shoppe http://www.glbco.com/default.htm Blair's Book Service http://www.netusa1.net/~selbypub/ Selby Publishing The auction site ebay <www.ebay.com > frequently has books of genealogical value, including the long out of print WPA American Guides Terri Walker researching: Rose, Cloud, Stipp, Eaves, Morgan in Fayette, Jessamine and Woodford Counties
Shoot! My ancestors had left Fayette by that time. If anyone comes across a book, The History of Fayette County Kentucky, written by W. H. Perrin, please let me know. This is the book that is suppose to have the history of my Thomson family. Thank you very much. ~Virginia Thomson-Baldwin
I would certainly be interested in a book or other information about Fayette County in this period. My ggrandmother was born in 1861, according to family lore, at the Henry Clay farm in Lexington of immigrant Irish ancestors. She had two (or three) siblings born there also. The family names were CUNNINGHAM, MEEHAN, FORRESTALL, WALSH. So far that is all I know of her ancestors so information on how and why the Irish arrived in Lexington and why they moved on to Cincinnati, OH by 1870 would be of great interest. I hope you get great response and will be looking for it. Joan Skirvin

Hi, All my MUDD direct ancestors lived over in Bullitt County between 1798 and 1893 so I have another reason for joining the list here in Fayette County. In the course of researching my ancestors in Bullitt County recently, I discovered one who was a slaveholder. I shared that information with an African American genealogy group and to make a long story short, one thing led to another and I've become involved in what to me has become a fascinating project. A court record book was found just this past summer buried among old boxes in the basement of the Adams County, Mississippi Court House in Natchez. It was filled with what are called "Certificates of Slaves" dating between 1858-1861. Each certificate lists the slaves name, the slaveowner, the date and the state & county where it was drawn up among other things. The slaveowner in all cases in this particular record book was always a slave trader who had already bought the slaves from local slaveowners and was transporting them down to the Natchez slave markets. There are three of us who have just finished transcribing the 1600 certificates. For anyone tracing their African American ancestors this is quite a find because nearly a third of the entries include both the first and last names of the slaves. Almost 750 of the 1600 certificates were drawn up in Fayette County. I'll provide the web link for anyone interested when we publish it next month, Black History Month, on the AfriGeneas web site <www.afrigeneas.com/>. Before the information is made available on the web, we wanted to provide a brief introduction. Because Fayette County and the City of Lexington in particular are one of the focal points of the story these certificates tell, we want to set the historical stage with good accurate information about the life and times in Fayette County between 1858-1861. Naturally we'll be focusing mainly on the slave trade but the social conditions, various life styles and how various people in the area thought of slavery is important and I want to include it. Georgia Wise, one of the members of our trio, lives in Alabama and has just returned from Natchez where she spent the holidays with relatives and was also able to gather historical information about that city during the time of what we have come to call the 'Natchez Record Book'. Gloria McCallum and myself live on the West Coast; she lives in Seattle and I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are doing this project in our own free time and with no budget except out of our own pockets and the information will only be made available to non-commercial genealogy groups. I'm planning a trip to Kentucky this spring to see the land of my ancestors but none of us is currently able to get to Lexington. So if anyone could suggest a good book or two that we might be able to get through an inter-library loan or any other documents or sources of information about Lexington and Fayette County during this time period, it would be very much appreciated. By the way, I have a copy of the genealogy study entitled "The Mudd Family of the United States" edited by Richard D. MUDD so if there is anyone needing information on MUDDs in Fayette County, I would be happy to look them up for you. I hope none of you minds me joining the group for this purpose rather than searching for ancestors. Bill Mudd San Francisco Bay Area
Hi. My name is Cheryl LaNore. I am researching the subject names. I hope I can explain this: My g-grandmother, Frances "Fannie" claimed that her maiden name was Bellwood. This may or may not have been true. In later years, she used Belle as a middle name. I do have a document which shows that her name was Fannie Bellwood, and she was born in Lexington, KY. I do know that Fannie was born June 5, 1884. However, I have been unable to find a birth certificate with the name Bellwood or the many other names she used during her lifetime (see below for further names). In the 1900 census, I found her, age 16, enumerated with her "parents", George and Ella Garret, along with the other children of George and Ella (Permenus, Daniel, Roxy, Willie & Rosa). In 1910, everyone is gone except for George, Rosa and a new son, Narvy Garrett. I do know for a fact that Narvy Garrett was Fannie's half-brother. Narvy Garrett's SS-5 says that his father was George Garrett, and his mother was Ellen Harlow. I also know that either Narvy's mother or grandmother was an American Native (Cherokee). Around 1904, Fannie married Clyde Knapp. Clyde was originally from Kansas, and his ancestors immigrated from Prussia to Wisconsin in 1846. Fannie and Clyde were married in Lexington, KY. At the time of the marriage, Fannie's last name was Eldridge. My mother told me that Fannie once told her (my mother) that Fannie married very young (before Clyde), and her husband died soon after the marriage. This husband may have been Eldridge. It would explain why she always considered herself a widow. As you all can see, I am up against a brick wall. I don't know if she was born a Bellwood, Eldridge or Garrett. Clyde and Fannie moved to Illinois where they had 5 children (Howard, Raymond, Gladys, Neola, and Katherine "Jessima"). In 1926, Clyde and Fannie divorced, and Fannie moved to Washington, D.C. with the girls. The boys stayed with Clyde. While living in D.C., Fannie married and divorced twice -- Earl Reid and Edward "Shorty" Canton. Any Bellwoods/Garretts/Harlows/ and/or Eldridges out there find any of this story familiar? Glad to be on board this list. Thanks to the individual(s) that run the show, and I look forward to all of the great information the list will surely provide.
Please post replies to the list as I think all of us would like to know the answer. Thank you. ~Virginia Thomson-Baldwin << So if anyone could suggest a good book or two that we might be able to get through an inter-library loan or any other documents or sources of information about Lexington and Fayette County during this time period >>

Notes for DAVID * HALL: The Hall family history is intertwined with the history of Bullitt County. Records indicate that David Hall purchased 1400 acres of land from the Johnson family in 1788. This land was located on the waters of Salt River in Bullitt County, then Nelson County. This land was to be divided between David Hall and his two brothers, William and Clifton (<<<< note name), and three other relatives, David Paris, Edmund Stringer and Thomas Harris. The Hall brothers are thought to have come from Virginia to Lexington, KY, then Nelson County before settling in Bullitt County. The original acreage covered most of the land from Loyd's Fork to what is now Mt. Washington. While most all the land has been sold and divided among descendants, about 150 acres of the original property is still in the Hall family today. This property is located on Hall's Lane on the banks of Floyd's Fork just before the bridge to Shepherdsville. Still living on the Hall land is Glendon, Shirley and Emery Hall.
