I will be in KY in a few more weeks. In the meantime, would someone please tell me the best place (anywhere in KY) to find child guardianship records pertaining to Fayette County in the early 1830s? Also, is there an index to such records? Hannah DUNLAP married Daniel CARPENTER in Fayette in 1826. He died in Harrison Co in late 1830. My best guess is that Hannah moved back to Fayette to be closer to her own DUNLAP family. I also believe that Hannah DULAP was the daughter of Eveleas LAIL and her second husband, William DUNLAP. Eveleas had been captured by the British & Indians at Ruddell's Fort in 1780. Would anyone know if Fayette has death records for the early 1830s? I'd love to know what happened to Hannah, as well as her 3 children... Eve Ann CARPENTER (b. 1827) William H. CARPENTER (b. 1828) George Daniel CARPENTER (b; about 1831) The newspaper obit for William H. says that he was orphaned at a young age. Any help would be appreciated. I'm looking for a "new" ancestor who was just "discovered" this week. Her name is Eloise Davis. My Texas-Davis line came from Hopkinsville, KY. They are: Richard J. Davis b. 1810 m. Sarah Ann Ware of Hopkinsville, KY Children: John Howard Davis b. 1848 in Lexington, KY Georgia Ware Davis b. abt 1867 In Hopkinsville, KY (I think) d. 1905, San Antonio, Texas Elvira Stewart Davis b. abt 1868 in Hopkinsville, KY (I think) d. 1914 in Galveston, Texas While going through a few keepsakes that I have of my Davis family, I found a small medal, with the words, "Belknap Medal," inscribed on the front. On the back were the words, "Eloise Davis 1885." My Davis ancestors came to Texas in 1881, so it would appear that Eloise must have traveled with them (although I can find no record of an Eloise Davis in San Antonio or Galveston, Texas for that time period). In searching the SSDI, I found an Eloise Davis who died in Hopkinsville, KY in August of 1974. Could this Eloise Davis have been the same Eloise Davis who owned the "Belknap Medal?" Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Fellow Bourbon County researchers, I am entering my final phase of collecting data for the "Early Families of Bourbon County, Kentucky, Project." After June, 2000, I will no longer ask for data on the early families who arrived in Bourbon County between 1775-1820, and will begin the actual writing stage of the project. My goal is to publish a series of books documenting the history and genealogy of these early families. Presently, I have accumulated approximately 20,000 names and, by the time I complete inputting data, this number will grow to 30,000+ names. If you have families that migrated to (and through) Bourbon County between the above dates--and would like to contribute to this project, please contact me. You can further read about this project on my "Early Families" web page (below). For those living in or near the Bourbon County, Kentucky, area, I will be visiting Bourbon County from June 20-25, as a part of my final research on this subject. I will be glad to visit with you and discuss this project in person. I plan to visit the John Fox, Jr., Library, at Duncan Tavern, Tuesday-Thursday, during their operating hours. I also plan to attend "Reunion 2000," the 220th Anniversery of the taking of Ruddell's and Martin's forts by the British and Native Americans. I hope to see you there. I am searching for the LEWIS family who lived on Nicholasville Pike, Fayette County KY in the late 1700s through at least the mid-1800s Surnames: LEWIS / WHITLEY / McCOY / HIGGINS / WARDER / DAVIDGE / CLARK my 3rd great-grandparents: Mary Ann LEWIS (1795-1836) Joseph McCOY (1794-1870) [they married in Fayette 1816 and moved to St. Louis (they both lived in Bourbon before Fayette)] her father, Jesse LEWIS (?b. 1770 Garrard Cnty-1816 Fayette KY); first wife (? Rebecca DAVIDGE of Anne Arundel MD) mother of Catherine, Elizabeth and Mary Ann; second wife, Jane LOGAN (1783-1831 Fayette KY) mother of Margaret (1807-1826), Samuel Higgins (1809-1870 m. Margaret CASSELL), Leo Logan (1813-? m. America Kay), William Logan (1810-? m. Abby), George Logan, Jane (M. Hiram Clime) Catherine LEWIS m. Robert WARDER (1814 Fayette KY) in the books History of Kentucky: ". . . Joseph Clark married Miss Kate Lewis, who was born in Fayette county in 1842 and passed away in 1882. She was a daughter of Samuel Higgins Lewis, a successful agriculturist, whose home was on the Nicholasville pike. Her brother, Theodore Lewis, served for many years as county clerk of Fayette county and his grandson also filled that office. Genealogies and Sketches of Some Old Families: ". . . By the devise made to his eldest son, John--among others--of 1,000 acres on Sinking Creek in Kentucky County, being a part of a 5,000 acre tract, and to his grandsons, Andrew, Samuel, and Charles (sons of his John above mentioned), he gives all of his part of the Pocotalico tract of land, which part he thinks is 2,100 acres, and the whole patented in the name of John Fry, Adam Stephen, Andrew Lewis, and others, and from these paragraphs in this will, in connection with the records of the Fayette County (Kentucky) Court, we find that Samuel Lewis and his wife (a daughter of Colonel Whitley) were parents of Jesse Lewis, and he with his wife, Jane Logan, were the parents of Margaret, Samuel Higgins, Leo Logan, Catherine, Mary Ann, and Rebecca, who have quite a numerous connection now living in Fayette County, Kentucky, and other sections of the country. Other grandsons of General Andrew Lewis settled on 9,000 acres of land which he owned at the mouth of the Kanawha, between it and the Ohio River, being the very ground over which he fought that memorable and bloody battle of Point Pleasant. . . ."

The Kentucky Room at the Lexington Public Library has an extensive collection of old Kentucky newspapers on microfilm, including the Kentucky Statesman. They will take research requests by mail, see: http://www.lexpublib.org/reference/kyroom.html I was able to get a LOT of old obituraries while visiting there this spring.
