I'm new to this list and thought I'd send out a general appeal for anyone researching the BEARD family who lived in Fayette County/Lexington in the 1800's. Henry Beard was in the War of 1812 and his son Oliver Hazard Perry Beard was in the Mexican War. Anyone researching this surname and have information about the family? Thanks in advance... Do you have any information on Emma Roe who married a Barnes in Mason Co. in 1878? Nancy
Yes, she was my gggrandmother. Her full name was Emma Howard Roe 1862-1916. She was the daughter of John D. Roe and Mary Elizabeth Howard of Mason Co. Is she connected to your line? I have more info on her and her family. Hal and all, My mothr's sister, Helen, daughter of a Fayette County mother and a Madison County father, married Estill McNew of Mt. Vernon, KY, and together they formed the dance group known as The Kentucky Briarhoppers, who were the first square dance group to perform on the Renfro Valley Barn Dance, and later appeared for some 20 years on the Midwestern Hayride on WLW radio and television. I am working to put a web page together to honor them and will post the URL when it's ready to go. The man who was the organist for Moon River for its first years just died. His obit was in the New York Times, but I can't remember his name. The poetry reader I remember was Peter Grant, but I'm sure there were others. WLW's transmitter tower in Mason, Ohio sent the signal out to everyone far and wide, and the station had its own stable of stars, including the Clooney sisters, Doris Mae Kappelhoff (Doris Day), Ruby Wright, Marian Spellman, Ruth Lyons, Bob Braun and others. Times have changed, and the radio station is a mere shadow of its former self in both power and programming. I understand that the Cincinnati Museum in the old Union Terminal Building allows visitors to listen to radio transcrptions and watch video tapes of the old television films on certain days of the week. It's also a good place to do genealogy. Enough! Just an additional comment from an oldtimer....born 1930..... Radio Stations were far and few between during the 1920-1930's, and the writer is correct about WLW in Cincinnati.....It was one of the most powerful stations licensed at the time....Know as "The Clear Channel Station" at it was "hearable" as far west and south as Texas. I cannot recall the transmitter size but it was the largest in the US at the time...seems to me it was either 50,000 watts or 500,000 watts. As a 17year old enlistee in the Air Corps at San Antonio, TX I always listened to the WLW Midnight news for five minutes followed by a Program called Moon River......Organ music of a romantic nature along with reading of romantic poetry.....wow, what a mixture.......Oh yea, before military, our family always listen to the Renfroe Valley Boys but I seem to recall they had a broadcast link to WLW from the Mt Vernon, KY area....we also listened to National Barn Dance that I believe came from the Chicago major station.... But can't remember what happened day before yesterday.....(^u^).....But at that tender age, Lulu Belle and Scotty were my favorites.........clap, clap, clap, anyone? Old Hal from sunny Northern California! "Life is so uncertain; Eat the dessert first!"
Sue, To my knowledge, no. My Barnes are Joshua Stockton Barnes m. Emma Roe in Mason Co. in 1878. They had three daughters that I am trying to trace: Lecretia (m. C. W. Scott), Mary (m. J. B. Harris) and Emily/Emma (m. C. T. Chapham). Did you have an Emmit Barnes in your line, who married a Darrow? Would have been in early 1900's. Sue
Zahn, I don't know about Lexington radio stations, but I doubt that there were many local stations. The biggest station for the kind of programming you are speaking of in the area would probably be WLW in Cincinnati, unless you are absolutely sure that she performed in Lexington. There was a station in Renfro Valley at this time, also, and the Renfro Valley Barn Dance was big. Another thing, do you know if she performed under that name, or had a stage name, or was that her stage name? I'd suggest that you contact the Lexington Public Library and ask them about the local radio programming in the area at the time. WLW has a web site, but I don't have the address right off hand. A search would give it to you. Hope this helps in some way. My John Carter Jr,born 1-2-1813, has been my BRICK WALL for about 30 years... He married somewhere in Ky, or Indiana about 1828-1830, an Eliza NUTTERFIELD/NUTTERFEE... He had a Brother JOB/JOBE who was deaf... Have been looking for his father for 30+ years...He was my gg grandfather. Any help would be appreciated...Eliza, I believe, was born in Shelby Ky,daughter of George and Nancy McWilliams NUTTERFIELD, But, who knows...One of my correspondants jokingly, I think, suggested that he, along with her John Carter, were deposited here as adults, with no ancestors, from an alien planet... I am not sure I go along with that, But, it is a better theory than I have been able to come up with... It would explain a lot... Dick Carter rcar37@prodigy.net
