I have been trying to trace the movement of Micajah C Lindsey, his wife Elizabeth McClurkin Lindsey, and related families, including Davis and Cheek families. An earlier researcher, Lois Meyer, published notes in the 1960s including a letter in which an informant told her that these people lived in Lexington, Kentucky in the late 1700s to early 1800s. We know that Micajah and Elizabeth were in the Carolinas until about 1800-1805, and that they were in Jefferson Co. Alabama by 1820. It is the time in between that I am seeking to find them. In the following, notes and comments enclosed in square brackets are mine. According to Lois's informant, Maggie Lee Hayes, a Davis descendant: "James Davis, born ? in Ireland but went to Wales and sailed from there to America. [his son?} Mathew Davis, born 1837 in Warren Co. Halifax Dist. [NOTE: she doesn't say what state, but probably North Carolina] M Elizabeth ? His [Mathew's] children- 1. John Davis, born 1770, N.C. 2. William Davis, N.C. married in Lexington Ky. last known of in Tenn. 3. James Davis, N.C. Settled in or near Lexington Ky. 4. Mathew Davis, born 1775, Warren Co. N.C. John Davis born 1770 in N.C. Married Mary Hawkins. [NOTE: from other sources, Mary was the daughter of Benjamin Hawkins, and they lived in the Lexington, KY area at the time of her marriage to John Davis.] Both buried in Tishomingo Miss. in the Holland and Lindsey burying ground. [NOTE: This is the Lindsey Cemetery just north of Dennis, MS.] Married 1792. John dies 1844, Mary died 1750. Their children- 1. Mathew Davis, b 1793 in Lexington Ky. m. Jane Lindsey Fayette Co. Ala. 2. Alvis Davis, b. 1795, m. Elizabeth Gregory, Fayette Co. Ala. 3. William Davis, b. 1797, m. 1st Miss Paden, 2nd Margaret Cheek, Fayette Co. Ala. 4. James Davis, b. 1800, m. 1st Nancy Jones, 2nd Leckey Wood. 5. John Davis, b. 1802 m. Nancy Franklin. 6. Robert Davis, b. 1804, m. Nancy Cheek, Fayette Co. Ala. 7. Mary (Polly) Davis b. 1807, m. Basil Lindsey. Went to Tish. Co. Miss. 8. Sarah (Sallie) Davis b. 1809, m. Holland Lindsey (son of Micajah Lindsey). 9. Thomas Davis b. 1812, Giles Co. Tenn. m. Ann Cheek. 10. Elizabeth Davis (Betsy) b. 1816 in Giles Co. Tenn. m. Thomas Norman, Fayette Co. Ala. d. in Tish. Co. Miss. After the birth of several children, John and William Davis, and Micajah Lindsey and families moved from Lexington Ky., to Warren Co. Tenn. near McMinville on the Cumberland River. Then to Giles Co. Tenn. Then to Ala. between 1812 and 20." Does anyone have information on any of these people? Or suggestions as to where to look when I make a research trip to Kentucky this spring? Dear Fern, The index just let's you know who's listed in the book, which I do have. Just let me know who you've found, & I'll let you know what the obituary says. Roxanne
Hello. I happened to stumble across a site that has the index to G. Glenn Clift's book, Kentucky Obituaries 1787 - 1854. The website is http://members.tripod.com/~alanjones/ky_obits/A.htm. This will get you to the As. The only way I could get to the other letters of the alphabet was to change the capital A to a capital of the letter I wanted. For example to look for Browning I would change the address to http://members.tripod.com/~alanjones/ky_obits/B.htm. I hope I haven't totally confused you. In any case, if you find someone, let me know. I'll let you know what the obituary says. I should warn you though that I work 2 jobs & may not be able to get back to you right away. Good luck. Roxanne
All the BUFORDs are mine but lets start with Col Abraham. Thanks a lot. Curious - how many pages does this book have? It must be quite large. I am researching my GG-grandfather James William T. Elliott, born 27 Jul 1836 in Lexington. With the help of Pam Brinegar I have located circumstantial evidence that his parents were James M. Elliott and Rosanna Burns. Rosanna died 9 Jul 1836, just 13 days after his birth. JWT Elliott appears to have grown up living with William and Margaret Byrns/Byrnes/Burnes, probably his maternal grandparents (or perhaps an uncle and aunt -- their relationship to him is unclear). William and Margaret Byrns, seem to have lived on a farm along the Town Fork of Elkhorn Creek on Leestown Road just west of downtown Lexington. JWT Elliott became a carpenter working in the blacksmith shop of Robert Burns (somehow related to William and Margaret Byrns -- possibly their child or nephew) on Mulberry/Limestone Street between High and Vine. In 1859 JWT married Margaret Harrison. They boarded with Robert Burns on High Street between Limestone and Upper. During this time, Margaret had two children (Rosa and Rebecca), but she died shortly afterward, about 1862 (cause of death unknown). J.W.T. stayed in Lexington through the Civil War, but never seems to have joined up (his two small children may have been a factor). At the end of the war in 1865, he married Sallie Brown. They moved to Anderson County, Kentucky sometime prior to 1870. Looking for * Burial location of Rosanna/Rosina Elliott (d. 9 Jul 1836 in Lexington) * Information about James M. Elliott (his parents, his birth date, his life, etc.) * Any existing Lexington homes from the 1850s or 1860s that JWT Elliott might have built (evidently he was a well-known house carpenter) * Location of William and Margaret Byrns farm * Photos of High/Limestone Street area from the 1850s/1860s Some notes * An A.S. Elliott owned a house on the corner of Limestone and High Streets during the period when JWT Elliott lived on High Street, but A.S. Elliott's will does not mention JWT Elliott. * There is a James M. Elliott who lived in Lexington in 1836 and went on to become a prominent dry goods merchant on Main Street. This same James M. Elliott later bought a house on the corner of High and Upper Streets, not far from where JWT Elliott and A.S. Elliott lived. I don't have enough information on this James M. Elliott to determine if he is the same James M. Elliott that married Rosanna Burns. From what little I have learned, he would have been pretty young (15 years old) in 1835. This James M. Elliott died in Cincinnati around 1889, but I have found no will information. Other three or four other James Elliotts lived in Fayette County during the 1830s-1870s, but non used a middle initial except the dry goods merchant.
There is also a BROWN line in Owen co KY.which my BROWNS are from and they moved into fayette co also John William Brown married Sarah (Sallie) Thomas bn May 06, 1860 owen co kY and died March 22, 1932 Fayette Co Ky George W Brown Sr (son of John and Sallie Brown) married Etheldia Gertrude Ritchey on November 08, 1898 Fayette Co Ky
Donald, I's a shame BROWN is such a common name - even in those far off times. I haven't worked on these folks too much, but I do have one or two possible additional bits of informatio: From the "Kentucky Reporter", 27 Dec 1820 - "Died on Dec 23rd Joshua Brown for many years highly respected. Left large family:, and From the "Kentucky Statesman", 25 Aug 1857 - "Died Mrs. Margaret Brown August 17th at age of 83 at Nicholasville." And in an 1847 letter from Elizabeth Johnson of Lexington to her aunt Anne Frost in Maryland, she says, "... ant pagy [Peggy] Brown family is all most gone." I don't know if that means they were all dead or just moved away. I'll keep my eye our for your Ezekial. Phil Donald L. Hey Phil, I found your post to be quite interesting in that I have a 4th great grandfather on my mother's side whose name was Azekial/Ezekial Brown. His birthdate is estimated to be abt 1807 and I understand from a census record, he came from Maryland. He lived in Fayette County, and on 16 Apr 1844 married a Sarah Stamper, daughter to Jessie Stamper and Barbara Devait of Amhurst County, VA. He moved with his new wife Sarah into Frankfort, Franklin County and lived out his life there. A couple of his children remained there also, but the majority of the others moved on into the Louisville area. There was an Ezekial Brown buried in the Lexington Cemetery on 11 Apr 1863, but I cannot determine if this is my Ezekial or not since he lived with his son Andrew in Frankfort in the 1860 Franklin census. The only child I know he and Sarah had was an Andrew J. Brown, who was born in 8 Mar 1833. That, however, is ten years prior to the marriage record I have for Ezekial and Sarah! This makes me feel certain that Ezekial was married prior to Sarah Stamper, since 1844 is a delayed marriage date for someone born in early 1800s. I'm very curious if your Joshua G. Brown might be a parent or relation to my Ezekial Brown since they came from the same area. I am trying to gather data on a group of siblings and other relatives who migrated from upper Anne Arundel Co, Maryland to the Lexington, Kentucky area around 1800. The earliest of these was Joshua G. BROWN and his wife Margaret (Peggy) MANSELL BROWN along with some of their children. His 1820 (Fayette Co) will mentions Matilda (m. Hugh PAYNE), Samuel M, Weston M, George W, Jefferson and Preston. In the early 1800's, came the children of Joshua's half brother Caleb FROST - although not Caleb himself. These included at least John Mansell FROST, Elizabeth FROST (married John B JOHNSON in Ky) and Joshua FROST. After Caleb's death in Maryland (1808) his widow Elizabeth (Betsy) MANSELL FROST migrated to Lexington to be with her children and died there in 1850. About the same time came Joshua OWINGS and wife Ruth FROST OWINGS, sister to Caleb FROST and half sister to Joshua BROWN. Among others they had Samuel OWINGS in Lexington in 1807. This family moved on to Coles Co, Illinois after 1830 and I don't know if any remained behind in Fayette Co. Also came the family of their cousin Larkin RANDALL about whom I know little. >From old family correspondence, the research of Dr. Donnell M. Specifically I'd like to find out the parentage of John J. FROST (m. Sarah GOUGH/GAUGH) and had daughters Lena (m. L.U. MILWARD) and Nellie (m. Charles R. STAPLES the historian) among others. John M. FROST who married Mary Seymour MILWARD and had Milward FROST in the late 1800's As mentioned before, Elizabeth Mansell FROST married J.B. JOHNSON, a wealthy planter from Virginia. Newspaper accounts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries mention a later J.B JOHNSON regarding disposition of the "Johnson estates", but I don't know if there is a connection. If you are connected to any of these folks or have any information, I'd appreciate hearing from you. I'd also very much appreciate knowing who was in the John M FROST, Joshua BROWN, Joshua FROST and J.B. JOHNSON households in the 1850 Census. I'd be happy to supply anything I can about these folks' Maryland connections. Not really. I just thought that he might have come from Maryland too. I only have him mentioned in A. M. Young probate information. Jeff Jeppson
Jeff, the information I have on this Samuel has him married (1) in 1829 to Mary Ellen PATTERSON (d. 1854 in Lexington), (2) in 1856 to Jane RANSDELL, Mont. Co. KY and (3) in 1861 to Margaret McClLURE of Carroll Co, KY. They moved back and forth between KY and IL until finally settling in Coles Co, IL in the late 1860's Samuel is a very common given name in the Maryland OWINGS family - and I'm sure quite a few ended up in Kentucky. There are literally dozens of them, so I'm not really sure where to start. Do you have any clue as to where he was from?
