While he remained in Maryland, nearly all of his children and several of their cousins migrated from Maryland to Fayette Co in the late 1790's. After Caleb died in 1808, his widow Elizabeth (Mansell) also went to Ky. John M FROSY was their elsest son, b. in Maryland in 1802 and d. in Fayette Co in 1889 and is buried in the Lexington Cemetery. Hi John, Here are your obituaries: "Simon Beckham, of Frankfort. Died Feb 6, 1830, at an advanced age." Feb 10 (I'm not sure what paper it was in. The book just has the letter A & I'm not sure what paper that would stand for.) "Andrew, son of John Chisham, of Lexington. Died of cholera July 30, 1849, aged 10 years." August 1 Observer and Reporter. "Mrs. Elizabeth Frost, relict of Caleb Frost, of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Died at Lexington, Ky., at the residence of her son, John M. Frost, Mar 15, 1850 aged 84 years." Mar 20 Observer and Reporter. Roxanne
LDS Film # 7957 Fayette County KY Tax Books After 1790 it appears that different sections of the county were listed separately. Patrick, Stephen, Robert, & William Davis seem to be in one district in 1791. 1791 List # 2 includes Leo Davis, Septimus Davis, Nathaniel Davis, Edw. Davis, Richd Davis, Ben Davis, John Davis, William Davis. 1792 List # 3 includes Leond Davis, Edwd David, Nathan Davis, Jno Davis I checked these lists from 1787 through 1802. The 1791 list was the only one with a John Davis listed. I was looking for a John Davis, son of Richard & Margaret Davis. Their other sons were Edward, Aaron, Solomon, & Nathaniel Davis. We think that Richard & Margaret came from Maryland to Fayette County, KY. Richard died in Fayette about 1797-99; Margaret died in Madison County, KY in 1808.
I just tried to get the Kentucky Room on line and I got a message that it was closed. Is this true or did I get an old message. Is there any one on this list that lives in Lexington that does research for people who live too far away to do their own?? Or maybe some one can give me an e mail address for the Library (Kentucky Room). Thanks a lot, this is a great list!! Fern in Colorado
Dear Sherry, Here are your obituaries; "Mrs. Agnes Steel, relict of Robert Steel, of Lexington. Died Sunday morning Feb. 5, 1814 at an advanced age." Feb 21 Kentucky Gazette. "Col. William Steel, of Woodford County. Died in October 1826, aged 71 years. One of the first settlers of Kentucky." Nov. 6 Reporter. I found William and his family in Wm. E. Railey's History of Woodford County (as well as how Thomas Steele was born in Newton-Limavady Ireland, etc). If you're interested I could scan it & send it to you. "Dr. Hugh Steel, editor of the Illinois Gazette. Died at Shawneetown, in September 1828." Sept 24 Reporter. Roxanne

Dear Robyn, I'm afraid I couldn't find your Thomas McClanahan. There are others, though; Amelia, Elijah, Irvine, Louisa, Margaret, and Robert. If you're interested in any of them, let me know. I apologize for the blank email earlier. My mouse is acting up & seems to have a mind of its own. Roxanne
Dear Glenn, I'm afraid neither Josiah Espy or Joseph Fuqua are listed in the book. I remember writing to you before about finding Josiah in Charles Staples's History of Pioneer Lexington where it mentioned that the Journal of Josiah Espy was published in Philadelphia in the fall of 1805. Have you been able to pursue that at all? I did a google search for his name & came up with 111 hits. Seems there's even a town named after a Josiah Espy. (http://www.colcohist-gensoc.org/Essays/Halcyon%20Days%20of%20Espy%20and%20Boating.pdf). Another one quoted him. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohwarren/Beers/III/0252.htm Josiah Espy Quoted Josiah Espy, author of " Memorandums of a Tour in Ohio and Kentucky in 1805," traveled through Warren County. He landed at Columbia July 25, 1805, after a voyage of ten days from Wheeling in the keel-boat "Mary." He visited his brothers, Thomas and David Espy, in Deerfield Township, Warren County, and afterward, his mother, who resided in Greene County, and whom he had not seen for seventeen years. He thus recorded in his journal his impressions :" The emigration to the State of Ohio at this time is truly astonishing. From my own personal observations, compared with the opinion of some gentlemen I have consulted, I have good reason to conclude that during the present year from twenty thousand to thirty thousand souls have entered that State for the purpose of making it their future residence. These are chiefly from Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, Maryland, Kentucky and Tennessee, but, on inquiry, you will find some from every State in the Union, including many foreigners. The inhabitants of the State of Ohio being so lately collected from all the States, have, as yet, obtained no national character. The state of society, however, for some years to come, cannot be very pleasant—the great body of the people being not only poor, but rather illiterate. Their necessities will, however, give them habits of industry and labor and have a tendency to increase the morals of the rising generation. This, with that respect for the Christian religion which generally prevails among that class of people now emigrating to the State, will lay the best foundation for their future national character. It is to be regretted, however, that at present few of them have a rational and expanded view of the beauty, excellency and order of that Christian system, the essence of which is Divine wisdom. The great body of the people will, therefore, it is to be feared, be a party for some years to priestcraft, fanaticism and religious enthusiasm." Another site, http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohwarren/Bogan/bogan210.htm wrote: In 1805 my great uncle, Josiah Espy, found Clark living in a lonely cabin on Clark's grant. Espy had served as a clerk in the War Department in the first administration of Washington and had often seen the first president. He wrote: "General Clark has now become frail and rather helpless, but there are the remains of great dignity and manliness in his countenance, person and deportment and I was struck on seeing him with, perhaps a fancied likeness to the great and immortal Washington." I don't know if any or all of these are your Josiah Espy, but it's interesting reading. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Roxanne
Dear Fern, I'm so glad I was able to help you. Good luck with your research. Roxanne
Interested in following lookups if possible. Josiah ESPY (early 1800's) Joseph FUQUA (early 1800's) Any help appreciated. Thanks, Glenn

Roxanne, I would like to request a lookup for the obit of Thomas McCLANAHAN. Thanks, Robyn
Would you please tell me about the obits for Robert Steel and Dr. Hugh Steel. I am also interested in the obit of Col. William Steel, if that's not too much to ask. Thank you very much. Sherry Steele (Seattle)

Roxanne, Thank you for checking -- anyway. Ellenor
Dear Fern, Your Col. Abraham Buford's obituary appeared in the July 4, 1833, Lexington Observer and Reporter. It reads, "Col. Abraham Buford of Scott Co.. Died of cholera June 26, 1833." The Sept. 9, 1833 Lexington Observer and Reporter had this obituary, "Mrs. Henrietta Buford, wife of Charles Buford of Scott Co. Died at Flat Rock, N.C., Aug. 31, 1833" Francis's obituary reads, "Francis K. Buford, of Woodford Co. Killed Sept. 3, 1836. Story in the December 7 Lexington Observer and Reporter" If you're interested in this I believe there are researchers at the Kentucky Room in the Lexington Library who will do research for you. I think they only charge copying fees & such, but I could be wrong. In the June 6, 1848, Lexington Observer and Reporter there is an obit for "James M., infant son of Henry & Bettie Buford. Died at the residence of James K. Marshall, in Bourbon Co., Monday, May 22, 1848." "Col. William Buford, of Woodford Co. Died Sept. 13, 1848. Sept 27, 1848 Lexington Observer and Reporter. "Mrs Frances Buford of Lancaster, consort of Col. Thomas Buford. Died of cholera July 8, 1849." July 11, 1849, Lexington Observer and Reporter. "St. Clair J. Buford, of Woodford Co.. Killed at Versailles during a fight with George W. Carter, former sheriff. Died July 18, 1851. Carter was held blameless." July 7, 1851, Kentucky Statesman. I think that's all of them. Since many of the names in the index appear in the same obituary, the book is actually rather small with only 221 pages, not counting the index. Roxanne
Roxanne, I am interested in the following obits. THanks TOdd BECKHAM, Simon CHISHAM, Andrew CHISHAM, John FROST, Elizabeth, Mrs. FROST, John N.
Dear Ellenor, Seems the obituary wasn't for Henry, but for his wife. It appeared in Kentucky Gazette on June 23, 1836, and reads, "Mrs. Dorothea Coons, consort of Henry C. Coons, died June 4, 1836, aged 34 years." Roxanne
I subscribe to the _KYFayette-L@rootsweb.com_ (mailto:KYFayette-L@rootsweb.com) . I don't remember seeing anything about "Index to Clift's Kentucky Obituaries, 1787-1854." I have ancestors who died in Fayette County (Lexington) in the early 1800's, and I would like to know if their names on on this list. Do you know how I could find out? Marjorie
