    3. Hello - I have received a death cert for a great uncle who was a Physician in Boyd Co. until 1943 and then retired to his former home in Lawrence Co, OH. The death cert has him as a patient at Eastern State Hospital in Lexington for approx. 2 years prior to his death in 1953. According to the website for Eastern State Hospital, this is a psychiatric facility. Am I correct that this has always been a psychiatric facility? I am trying to learn more about my great uncle's condition in his later life that would have necessitated his admission and prolonged stay at this hospital. Thanks so much for the assistance. Regards, Nancy Edwards - in GA -

    3. Hi Carleen, There is a good chance that NPRC will have something, but be prepared to apply more than once. I think they are probably short-staffed and can't put much time in each request. I don't know how long the VA keeps their records or where they send them for storage. Here's a link to the new NPRC site. nara.gov is now archives.gov. http://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st_louis/military_personnel_records.ht ml From there you can get info on the 1973 fire and download SF-180 to request records. Be sure to follow the instructions and send the form to the right address for each request. Good Luck. 3. The NPRC does NOT charge for their records. However, it may take more than one attempt to get the records you require. It took me at least 6 tries with partial responses to get my own records for a VA claim. It is still incomplete. Under current rules, when the VA requests records the original is sent to them to keep and they become responsible for it afterwards. Kind of like having the fox guard the henhouse. My most recent attempt to get records was for my father's military record (WW2). Apparently his records were in a section destroyed by fire. They sent me a questionnaire to fill out so that they can try to reconstruct his military record from other records. That was about 2 months ago. Good Luck. 3. Following is info on the imminent release of US Navy and Marine Corps records, 1885-1939, which is of interest to many family historians, including Fayette, Kentucky. Before the military information, a brief comment: do you suppose it would be acceptable to the list owner if we occasionally did combination postings to the list, each containing an item of research relevance to the county following by another item of a general nature (oh, let's say for example, "Strangers in the Box")? Just a thought. Pam Brinegar Coordinator, Fayette County KYGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyfayett/fayette.htm "Opening the Door" to the National Archives in St. Louis" ....... St. Louis, MO . . . At 11 AM on Saturday, June 11, 2005, the National Archives National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis will formally open the records of Charles Lindbergh, President John F. Kennedy, General George S. Patton, Steve McQueen, Clark Gable, and Jackie Robinson, among others. Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein will officiate at the ceremony. U.S. Congressman William Lacy Clay and other dignitaries will participate in the opening festivities. Working press is invited to attend. Doors will open for the media and invited guests at 9AM. The National Archives National Personnel Records Center is located 9700 Page Avenue, in suburban north St. Louis County. For the first time, nearly 1.2 million official military personnel files of former US Navy and Marine Corps enlisted personnel who served between 1885 and 1939 will be open to the public. This first opening also includes 150 "persons of exceptional prominence", including former Presidents, famous military leaders, celebrities, entertainers and professional athletes who served in the military and have been deceased for at least 10 years. An exhibition focusing on some of these military personnel files will be open for the media, attendees and the public. A display of documents and artifacts recovered from the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor also will be on display at the NPRC. Additionally, the YMCA, Red Cross, Salvation Army and USO will have booths highlighting their support to military personnel for the World War I period and beyond. The public is invited to an open house from noon to 3 PM. Guided tours of the National Personnel Records Center for the public offers an opportunity to see areas that have never been opened to the public before, including record storage and stack areas, the Preservation Lab and a new archival research room. The public and the media must present photo identification and allow extra time on arrival to complete security screening. Non-flash photography/video will be allowed in designated areas only.
