There were German prisoners that helped on surrounding farms during the World War II period. I heard my husband speak of having them on their farm at Stamping Ground because our men had gone off to fight and there was a lack of help to do the crops. He said they were well behaved and talked through an interpreter. My husband's grandfather came to the United States from Germany and the prisoners knew people by our surname back in Germany. I remember seeing some, but cannot remember where now. It was a long time ago. List, Getting a little confused. I know outside of Richmond there is the large Lexington BG Depot, and another Lexington BG Depot just outside of Lexington on Briar Hill Rd, Rt 57. So where does Lafayette High School fit in here? The high school is nowhere near the two LBGDs. robert ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Rothenbuhler" <rrothenbuhler@austin.rr.com> To: <kyfayett@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 12, 2007 12:23 PM Subject: Re: [KYFAYETT] Army Base > Elaine, > I did not realize about the German prisoners of war being held near > Lafayette. > > List, > Would anyone have additional info on this? Like many inquires, I do a lot of research myself, but a recent post of cemeteries, in Jefferson County, KY I found the following at: > SOURCE: > _http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyjeffer/cems/germanreformedpresbyteriancemetery.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyjeffer/cems/germanreformedpresbyteriancemetery.html) FOOTNOTES: #65. > 65. John Woolet, Sr., married first to Katherine Frederick, daughter of Andrew, married second 18 Aug 1831 to Elizabeth Lewis, widow of Michael, married 17 Mar 1839 to Mary Bullock, widow of Richard E. and daughter of Thomas & Susannah Graham. At this point I have no other data on identity of Elizabeth ? Lewis a widow of Michael, who became the second wife of Mr. Woolet, nor the identity of Thomas Graham the father of the 3rd wife of Mr. Woolet now buried in the Presbyterian cemetery. His wives seemed to be of short duration in the early 1800s. My inquiry is to see if there are any LEWIS or GRAHAM researchers on the list who may assist in the lineage of the LEWIS and GRAHAM families. In retrospect, to readers, the GRAHAM family name reaches back into early Kentucky pioneers, by way of N. C., from VA, from England and their marriages that made their homes in Clark County, Henry County, Green County, Fayette County, and migrations 1840s into early lands of MO using the then steam boats for travel from KY to MO. In Green County, KY the Graham name became and is still prevailing from the same Graham lineages. they have been traced back into early British Isles families. The MICHAEL former husband of Elizabeth appears to be a LEWIS by marriage. Has anyone a lineage of this MICHAEL? Was he a pioneer of KY or a son of a LEWIS pioneer of the 1790s? Appreciate any assistance. JOHN in CA (formerly of Louisville) ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Robert, I grew up there in the 60's and 70's and the only Army base I remember was the Lexington Bluegrass Army Depot on Briar Hill Road between Lexington and Winchester. There's another larger LBAD just southeast of Richmond. One may be an annex of the other. If there was something around the Lexington area before that, it was before my time. Hi List, In the 1945 timeframe, was there an Army Base in Lexington or near? If so, where is/was it located and how big was it? thanks, robert
Robert, I took pictures of all three of your previous homes yesterday and they look very good. As soon as I get some other work done I will upload them and send them to your personal e-mail. BTW, at the Richmond Avenue home a "burly" guy came out of the house wanting to know why I was taking pictures of his house. I told him my reason for doing so and he asked me again, I answered again but by then he was getting a bit angry so I got in the car and left. Makes me wonder why he got upset.....hm? Joyce

Robert, Might I suggest you write a letter to that address, address it to "occupant," or whatever. Ask them if it is divided into apartments. You might ask if they know some older, longtime residents on the block that might have information any abt the old days. You would be surprised people will do and try to help you. We "oldies" know this from the days that snail mail was the only way to do research. Be sure to give the people your on-line address too. Or ask if you can call them. Send a SASE addressed to yourself. That makes all the difference in the world. [That also works when you send for a marriage lic, will, etc., to the harried, underpaid clerks offices. Most times they are on a tight budget. Plus it makes it so much easier for them to pop that copy in your completed enveloped. I always send at least $2. for copies, and they will let you know if that is sufficient.] Don't mean to teach here, but it may help, and can't hurt. Hello Robert, Anna is right. Go to http://www.pvdnetwork.com/PVDNet.asp?SiteID=116 as Anna stated, do not add the word "Avenue" to the address. It won't give you anything, just add "Woodland." Thanks Joan. I was reading some old letters of my parents during the end of August, beginning of September 1940 when they moved from Ohio to Lexington, and it mentioned they were moving into an apartment. Will ask someone if they could drive by 154 Woodland and take a picture and send it to me if they have a digital camera. You say it looks like a house. Could it have a house with an apartment? thanks, robert ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joan Boetger" <boetger@earthlink.net> To: <KYFAYETT@rootsweb.com> Cc: <rrothenbuhler@austin.rr.com> Sent: Thursday, May 03, 2007 5:41 AM Subject: Re: Apartment or House on Woodland Ave., Lexington > Robert, > > It looks like a house to me on this website. > I can't get a close enough look to confirm. > http://www.zillow.com/search/Search.htm?addrstrthood=154+Woodland+Ave&citystatezip=Lexington%2C+Kentucky&GOButton=%3CSPAN%3EGO%3C%2FSPAN%3E > > Also, go to this Google Map site at > http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ned=us&tab=nl&q= > then type in the address. > > Joan Boetger > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Robert Rothenbuhler" <rrothenbuhler@austin.rr.com> > To: <KYFAYETT@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, May 02, 2007 11:54 AM > Subject: [KYFAYETT] Apartment or House > > > Hi List, > My parents lived at 154 Woodland Ave, Lexington in the 1940 timeframe. > Can anyone tell me if that address is an apartment or house? > > thanks, > robert rothenbuhler >
