Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I have a letter dated May 13, 1847, from a son (Alex J. Bourgoin) to his father, Joseph Bourgoin. Alex says he is writing from Bon harbor and father lives in Cincinnati. Alex says he is sick with dysentery and is leaving this place, so father should direct replies to Owensboro, Kentucky. I am unsuccessful in locating any place called Bon harbor. Alex's handwriting is very precise, so I do not think he means Bar Harbor. I have tried the 1895 atlas site for locations along the Ohio/Mississippi river and have tried USGS GNIS with no joy. Any ideas? Curious that the U.S. Gov't site USGS geonames doesn't know about it. But, fortunately, you helpful folks did. Just in case, then, would anyone recognize the names Mr. Allis and/or Mr. Triplett as local employers or important people in Bon Harbor in the 1847 time period? Was there more there than the coal mining? (Thanks STALLMW) My family member (author of the letter in my first message) was hired as a "superintendent" and paid twenty dollars per month plus board. He was ill with dysentery, didn't like the work, and was planning to return to Cincinnati as soon as he paid a debt to Mr. Allis. My grandfather may have lived in Daviess and the name Maryville was associated with where he lived as well, but I haven't found such a place in any gazetteer or other sources.
