    1. Re: [KYDAVIES-L] Davis Douthitt's Journal - February - March 1859
    2. I have followed Mr Douthatt's journal, and am sorry that there isn't any more to be posted. We tend to think of a journal as a privately set down collection of thoughts. This is not so much a journal as a record of accounts to be settled. A merchant would list how much he paid for coal oil, clerk's fees and pen nibs. He would also list anything owed him by customers. This is, of course, what we have been lucky enough to get a view of. Farming was Davis Douthatt's business, before he apparently branched out into masonry (all of those chimneys) and arbitration (the lawsuit mentioned recently). If you look at the images on US Genweb for the 1840 Daviess County Ky Federal Census project, you'll find at the very bottom of the image list an index of the folks appearing on the census. I happen to know that a whole lot of hours were spent deciphering those names - I did that index myself. This is not to brag, but to tell you that finding not only names of my Tucker relatives, but those of Reason McDaniel (the enumerator spelled it Resen) and William Winkler really brought it home that these were real people. I felt like I had found old friends. Thanks, Carol, for all of your hard work.
