August 1858 Sun 8 I staid at home ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Mo 9 I went to Owensboro as a witness John plowed tobacco I was sick ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tue 10 I was not well nothing done ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- We 11 I hunted squirrels and John plowed tobacco ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Thu 12 I worked on a buggy bed J H Douthitt and Wm Winkler helped me ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 13 Wm Winkler helped me finish my bed at dinner after dinner I sowed turnip seed in the tobacco John plowed tobacco ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 14 I went to the letting out of the livy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- I have no clue what he did on Saturday . It was a letting out of something. Definitely a 4 letter word. The 1st letter is the same as the way he writes an l in other words, 2nd letter is dotted so I am pretty sure it is i. 3rd letter shaped the same as the v in Knottsville , last letter has the drop and could be a g but livg doesn't make any more sense than livy. So what was he up to?

Su 15 I went to meeting at Mt Zion ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Mo 16 I went to Knottsville twice after the doctor for William he is sick and worked on a school house John toped tobacco ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tu 17 (school commenced) I helped J W Barnett cut hay until dinner nothing done John and Sarah went to school ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- We 18 I went to Husks shop with Pleasant John wormed tobacco and dedened timber Sarah went to school ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Thu 19 I went to Owensboro on business ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 20 I did not do much work hunted a little ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 21 I went a hunting with W S Tucker John worked in the tobacco ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------- Tues 17 - John & Sarah went to school - John Christian was indentured with the Douthitts. He was 6 in the 1850 census & 13 in 1860. Sarah Amanda Douthitt was Davis's daughter born Oct 29, 1852.
