Sept 1857 I failed to include these entries for Sept 12, last week Satur 12 I helped Allen and Gatewood raise a house and John went and took Nancy Winkler to old Mr Winklers and then he succored a little tobacco and lazed around the ballance of the day ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Reason McDaniel and myself is square in point of swaping work Sept 12th 1857 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- I am seven days behind with William Winkler in our swaping work Sept 12th 1857 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- I am behind with G Husk half day in our swapping work Sept 12th 1857 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Su 13 I went to Asbury Chapple and heard A F Dadisman preach in the evening ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Mo 14 We cut and halled poles and forks to make tobacco scaffolds and halled a load of sticks from Wm Winklers barn and cut hung and succored tobacco ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tues 15 John went to mill and I made a straw pen and halled and scaffoled tobacco and after dinner we cut and hung tobacco ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Wed 16 We scaffoled tobacco and succord some tobacco and after dinner we cut and put up tobacco and I went to hunt a squirrel for Reason McDaniel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Thu 17 John fooled around until nearly dinner and I made bords in the evening we put up some straw John bolted cord timber ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 18 I helped Mr Lee thrash wheet for Wm Winkler it rained about 4 oclock and we did not get done John halled some bords to the barn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 19 I helped Mr Lee finish thrashing wheet we got at dinner I was at work for William John finished succoring tobacco after I got home I went and killed a mutton for Reason McDaniel

W. I would have said that Davis had no sense of humor but he does seem to be amusing himself with some sort of code. A. Armstrong age 27 was numbered at 654 in 1860. The Douthitts were at 645

October 1857 Sund 11 We went to Reason McDaniels ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Mon 12 We went and halled the fan home and faned our wheet assisted by William Winkler ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tue 13 I helped Reason McDaniel fan wheet John cut and halled some wood and wheet ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- We 14 We helped Reason McDaniel fan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Thu 15 I went to Owensboro after our roles but they was not carded and there came a hard storm and rained on me all the way home John went and took some wheet to meet Reason McDaniel at Gatewoods he was going to Hawesville mill and then John halled some tobacco for Ephraim McDaniel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 16 I started to Presbytery at Calhoun and got to Jesse Moseleys John halled some tobacco for Ephraim McDaniel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 17 I went on to Calhoun and attended Presbytery ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------- Thurs 15 Davis has mentioned going after "roles" several times. and I had no clue what they were. Since they had to be carded I'm guessing now that it was wool from his sheep. Who knew wool was such a big part of their life? I thought they kept sheep because they taste so good BBQed !
