May 1856 Su 18 I staid about home most all day went to Allens awhile in the evening it is still raining ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Mo 19 We worked with J H Hodgkins tobacco until we finished stripping and after dinner I helped William make a milk house ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tues 20 I got William to help me hall off Hodgkins tobacco and after we got back we helped William replant corn commenced at 2 oclock ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- We 21 William laid off the orchard and we planted until we got done and John finished planting and I helped William lay off his ground both ways before dinner and after dinner we helped him plant ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Thu 22 We got our lambs to mark and altar and made a pig pen to get our pigs in to mark altar and spay them and S W Allen spayed them and we finished planting our potatoes and at 3 oclock we went and helped R Mcdaniel plant corn I have got a rising on my hand I can drop only corn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 23 William finished braking corn ground for me in my bottom and laid it off one way and I dropped corn for S W Allen I can do nothing but that ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 24 We finished planting corn and William Winkler helped me my hand is not better yet ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- According to a column that I read recently about old medical terms, a "rising" was a boil.
