Happy new Millenium. The list has beeen awfully quiet lately so maybe you will be happy that Davis Douthitt resumed writing his daily journal on New Years Day 1857 and is as boring as ever. For new list members a quick explanation James Douthitt married Elizabeth Barnett in Daviess County Jan 19,1826, their son Davis, was born Dec 19, 1826. He lived all his life on the family farm near Knottsville in an area known as Scythia. My mother was born in 1914 in the same house he lived in. Davis kept a daily log of his activities from 1855 through 1859. I have been transcribing this from his original manuscript and posting it to the list on a weekly basis for the last two years. It is slow work. I try to be as accurate as possible but those of you who have struggled to read old documents know how didfficult this can be. His handwriting is usually readable and his spelling isn't bad but he wasn't too concerned about punctuation or capital letters. The people he names are all either neighbors or relatives and I have attempted to identify as many as possible. If you draw a circle on a map with Owensboro, Hawesville, Hartford and Hardinsburg in the perimeter you would probably include every place he ever visited.. His grandfather, Solomaon Barnett and in-laws Willis & Mary Black lived in Ohio County, some of his Douthitt relations lived in Hancock county.
