June 1856 Sun 29 I went to Valentine Richmonds with S R Richmond and James Richmond ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- M 30 I cut wheet for Reason Mcdaniel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- July the 1st 1856 Tu 1 I cut wheet for Reason McDaniel until dinner and then I helped S W Allen cut wheet to pay him for Saturdays work ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- We 2 I cut wheet for George Husk John split middles in our corn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Thu 3 I finished my wheet at dinner assisted by Wm Winkler after dinner I helped S W Allen in his wheet late in the evening there came a fine rain ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 4 It rained a while in the morning commencec cleaning out the stable and after it quit raining I ploughed corn in the new ground John set up corn and thinned ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 5 I finished ploughing the corn about 4 oclock and helped William finish his corn The Richmond brothers were his cousins I guess he isn't celebrating the 4th this year. I wonder if the political climate was getting rough. This was just 4 years before the War. Who knows what you do when you "split middles" in the corn?
In the 1940's Daviess county farmers used a horse-drawn cultivator "bustin the middles" between corn rows. Bet it was about the same as "splittin the middles".
