I wonder if the political climate was getting rough. This was just 4 years before the War. Who knows what you do when you "split middles" in the corn?

In the 1940's Daviess county farmers used a horse-drawn cultivator "bustin the middles" between corn rows. Bet it was about the same as "splittin the middles".
