May 1857 Su 24 I staid at home all day ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Mo 25 I piddled around some and fixed the milk house door and put a latch on my door John picked up some chunks and cut stalks and pick them up off of the tobacco ground after dinner I cut up a tree top in my tobacco ground William went and took Marthy Black part of the way home and meet? Mother Black back back he got back at 10 oclock ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tu 26 I went to griff. Gatewoods to see about my corn and then went and halled it home I got 10 bushels at 55cts per bushel John cut some wood and then we commenced halling manure and it went to raining and we quit ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- We 27 We halled our manure it rained another shower and bothered us awhile ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Thu 28 I broke up my tobacco ground John went to Mr Winklers to get some flour and then he dug a log out of the ground and cut it off. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 29 We roled our logs in the new ground assisted by Wm Winkler W Crow S.W. Allen & Griff Gatewood and then I finished breaking my ground after dinner John went to break ground for S. W. Allen to get me a pr of shoes made I plowed my potatoes & hoed them and hoed the ballance of the garden ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sa 30 It is raining a slow but steady rain John went to Allens to plow he worked half day ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------

May - June 1857 Su 31 I said at home all day ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- June the 1st 1857 Mo 1 I made a garden gate and hung it John made hills and planted our watermelons. and in the evening we deddened some timber. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tues 2 I harrowed awhile and John cleaned up tobacco ground and when he finished cleaning up ge harrowed and I worked at making a style when he finished harrowing I fixed up the harrow and John went to replanting corn and I finished my style ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Wed 3 I fixed my buggy wheel and took off the old spring and put on another and ? ? John replanted corn in the evening it rained ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- June the 4th 1857 Thu 4 I worked my road at the upper gate out side and in side John replanted corn I had the toothache and did not feel much like work ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 5 I had the toothache and piddled around and made a wheel barrow or the runing gear of one John replanted corn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 6 I had the headache and did not do much I fixed up some fence and made a body for a wheel barrow John finished replanting corn in the long field and commenced the other field and quit at dinner

June 1857 Sun 7 I staid at home all day ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Mo 8 I laid off some tobacco ground and a part off it the second way and made hills in the evening it rained John finished replanting corn and then he broke his potatoe patch and laid it off ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tu 9 we set out 14 hundred and 50 plants and I finished laying off my ground in the bottom and John helped Ephraim plant tobacco and after they finished we made hills ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- We 10 John broke a part of our tobacco I stopped the hogs out of the pasture I did not do much Elizabeth is sick in the evening it rained again and rained nearly all night ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Thu 11 We set the ballance of our tobacco assisted by William and Ephraim ; we finished that piece at 10 oclock after dinner I went to Knottsville after some medicine and John finished breaking and harrowing our tobacco ground in Ephraims field. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 12 I laid off that patch both ways John wormed tobacco after dinner I broke and harrowed the garden for tobacco John planted his potatoes ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 13 I went to Hawesville amarketing John made some hills I did not get the buggy home on account of a storm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------- My great-grandfather, Charles William Douthitt, was born June 10, 1857
