April 1857 Su 26 It rained apart of the day and I went to W. May 1857 Su 3 We went to Samuel Allens on a visit ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Mo 4 We made another gate for the road at the bower end of the pasture Wm Winkler helped me awhile in the evening it rained all day the ground is very wet ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tu 5 We dug holes for the gate on the road and cut posts and halled them and after dinner we raised our posts and gate assisted by E. McDaniel Charles Payne John Obryan & Wm Winkler and then I went to take Mrs McDaniels Bull home. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- We 6 We got posts; dug holes for gate and bars and put up the bars and then raised our posts and gate assisted by E. Crow & Addison Perry . after we got done Ephraim and myself went a squirrel hunting got 8 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Th 7 John ploughed corn ground I made 2 gate latches and fixed the fence at the branch and cleaned up some ground ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 8 I cleaned up a little ground and went over to Ephraims to look over his papers for him and to rent some corn ground from him John ploughed a part of the day after dinner I staid about the house split and shaved some gate timbers Elizabeth is sick . but she is better ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 9 I finished cleaning up corn ground in the long field and commenced laying off corn ground John finished breaking corn ground in the long field ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------ Fri 8 "Elizabeth is sick" My gr-grandfather was born in June of 1857 so Elizabeth is also very pregnant

May 1857 Su 10 I staid at home ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Mo 11 I started John to breaking corn ground in E. Mc field and at 10 oclock I went to laying off corn ground ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Tu 12 I went to hunt J. H. Douthitt to get him to work for me I hunted awhile for him and got him we got back at dinner after dinner I laid off corn ground Harvey helped me we layed off all of the long field the 1st way and commenced crossing John broke cornground ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- We 13 It rained awhile in the morning we worked on my corn coverar and finished it and then we finished crossing the lower cut and went to planting corn but the coveror would not do and we had to cover with our hoes it rained in the evening and at night again and got the ground wet John broke corn ground ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Th 14 We cut and fixed logs in the 3 acre field until 10 oclock and the ground dried out and we went to crossing off corn ground in the upper end of the long field John finished breaking corn ground in Ephraims field ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Fri 15 We planted corn assisted by Wm Winkler Harvey Douthitt and E Crow and after dinner Sam Crow. I laid off the corn ground in Ephraims field the boys finished planting the long field and I finished laying off my field and commenced crossing ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Sat 16 We planted the ballance of our corn assisted by Harvey and Sam Crow we finished 2 hours by sun and quit work for this week I paid Harvey $1 & 10cts
